After all I. not tbla whole thing, which la rending and tearing the people of Utah apart, only a misunder-atandlng- ? If a traveler from tome unknown country whose religious thought was cast in other molds were to come to Utah, would he not answer the question in the affirmative? He certainly would if he could Impartially sound the feelings of the vast majority of the people no matter to which faction they might belong. A few radical souls may lead the people astray for a time, may even stir up strife. This ever has been the fact. But deep down In the hearts of the common people the conservative, common people the brother-h09- d of man has taken sturdy root, the love and pride in a common heritage has also taken root and they awake to that after all their find differences are small, and that they have been lighting a chimera. Now to apply this to Utah conditions. A faction has declared that political freedom in the state is a name only. Those who are the most blamed for this condition declare with equal earnestness that they do not wish to control political actions. It only remains for the people whom it is claimed are despotically ruled on the one hand, and declared to be politically free on the other, to themselves declare their political freedom and the thing Is accomplished. When It Is considered that privately not one of these people will admit that they are directed in politics by others, the thing seems easy of accomplishment. ' It requires, however, that their voice be heard, not privately but in a public way. This can only be made effective through an organization designed for that purpose. It can only be made effective by a determination to eschew any actlop blch can, savor of undue dominance 'of any or sect In political affairs. Another question enters into the quotient. The assumption of a Phari-slca- l patriotism by the other class must be dropped. For they may be as bound by their prejudices as they fancy the others are bound by religious predilictions. Both may In reality be free after all. Study to get together, citizens of Utah and cease the study of those things which keep you apart. "GREATER the factions and only increase the number of those who are crying against the state, or will they become enamored of our beautiful sunlit vales and sun kissed mountains and determine that here is the most favored spot upon which to build their homes and rear their children? More pertinent than all this, will they find a community banded together for mutual advancement or will they only increase the extent of the general discontent over prevailing conditions in ihc ratio of their numbers? These arc grave questions and every citizen Jl THE SMOOT CASE. Advices from Washington Indlcute that a vote in the Smoot case. as it Im termed, will he taken on Felt- uary 20th. It is tme that protection from the cold was the prime motive of this covering, yet it Is permls-sabl- e to believe that some coquetry of a primitive kind formed part of the make-u- p of these belles. The resurrection of women's attire of prehistoric limes must he entirely left to our Imagination, as no indications remain that might show uh palHut later, pably the effect produced. when civilization dawned upon mankind, the evolution of woman's dress can be traced all through the frescoes of Babylonian palaces; the runic inscriptions, the pyramids of Egypt, the eternally beautiful temples of Rome and Greece, the exquisite statues of Tanagra, the medieval tombs in Gothic cathedrals. The gorgeous apparel of the Renaissance period may be followed through the works of art of the great masters, the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, Titian. Velasquez, Rembrandt. In the same connection, the thought ia suggested as to whether or not the man be alone iu his question of principle. If there are others with him. It doubly entrenches him, for if one fails or falls all must fail or fail. When the United Republicans was organized all Boris of dire prognostications were made. It was stated that certain parties or elements were boing to hound the leaders of the new movement out of the state; they would be killed forevermore politically in this state and many other like expressions. We do not believe that such remarks were ever made. If they were, it Indicates a material weakness on the part of the dpposition whoever If our position Is they may be. strong, our opponents then must be so much weaker. Such opposition can do no good and will result In considerable harm to them. There are thousands, of people throughout the state who are taking up the light of the United Republicans; people who are free American citizens, who want a Greater Utah who are aiming for right and principle. They maintain that if conditions are wrong, they should be righted, and that the United Republicans show the way. It is a and moral question of principle stamina. UTAH. If the state were yet a desert, were the mines of Utah yet unprospected this population must of a necessity come. Outside of this it is impossible to point out any other cause which would or could add to the population of the state. Utah is a sovereign state, and as such has the right to name its representar tires, both at home and at .WashingtonThis prerogative some would deny her. We claim that Utah has the right to name who it desires. If, as we stated before, mistakes have been made, it is not the proper thing to cavil and bark after the work is done. Calm Judgment and deliberation before the perpetration of the act should hare been the case. If the Republican party, the dominant political party in this state saw fit in its Judgment to send Mr. Smoot to Washington, the members of that party should back up their Judgment-sho- uld stand by their guns. As to whether or not It was a mistake to send Mr. Smoot is not now the question. That should have been considered before action was taken in regard to sending him. It is the moral and bounden dut of every Republican to stand by their choice; in upholding Mr. Smoot they are sustaining the will of the majority of their party, if they object to his having been sent, the next election Is the time to make provision to guard against a repetition of that mistake.- - By all means let Senator Smoot retain his seat. There she stands, tall and slender. of mere physical beauty, adorned by matchless productions of the masters In tha art of creating marvels of elegance and loveliness of beautiful fabrics. The most perfect beauty as to form and features, enhanced by the most exquisite conception! of the attire becoming her style, will say nothing to the heart and mind; If aoul does nnt shine triumphant from her eyes, thought does not dwell on her brow, she will lie hut a beautiful doll, appealing only to the coarser Instincts, leaving the higher and nobler feelings untouched. Her shallowness, her frivolous talk, her pretty smiles, bar silvery laughter, to which so much study Is devoted, may bo good for a time, a short time only. For beauty, as all fair things. Then nothing will remain to her except the fear and horror of losing her adulation which for so long has been her daily food and which turns its flight toward other business. An empty Ufa is what awaits the woman who has made a god of her beauty, has sacrificed every thing on the altar of vanity, and more than one has ended by taking her life which became meaningless to her whet age had dimmed her eyes, silvered her hair and withered the roses on her checks. This the women of France and Italy had well understood and their saloni were the field In which the genius of a Corneille, a Moliere, a Racine and other great poets and writers found development and encouragement. To assemble such men around her, a woman must not be merely a dressed-udoll; no matter how exquisitely she Is dressed she must possess intelligence and knowledge, great tact and refinement to be able to lead the conversation, draw out the shy and modest man of lettora, tiring out his happiest thoughts, hi must eloquent flow of language, argue, discuss to make hla genius shine forth more brilliantly then her fan r scertcr and a leader's baton ami her seat a throne. But all this la gone; great men arc lionized, inrlted, 'Iiiiwii off for vanity's sake to frfenda and acquaintances as rare animals, tha poor nil'll lielng rendered greatly ulc and deeply miserable by ail sorts of incongruous questions. To draw nut a man of genius or talent, to spur him on, woman must nnt he too far below him herself In Intellect. In knowledge, in the understanding of greatness, in refinement of feeling and depth of thought. Though geniua and talent are given but to the few elect, every woman of average intelligence may reach the attainments mentioned if she take but the trouble of developing It. Thus not every thought must bo given to fashion, to enhancement of the charm of the physical self, not everything must be sacrificed on the altar of beauty.
