Stockton mining district, forty miles .southwest of Salt Lake City, on the line of the Salt Lake Route, la one of the oldest mining camps In the state, and reached the zenith of its prosperity in the late seventies of the last century. It has always been noted as a rich silver-leacarbonate producer. Stockton was the home of several smelters, and for a number of years the mining boom was on. When the carbonate changed to a sulphide ore, which it did at varying depths, the mine owners loBt faith In the district, the smelters, which had reduced several million dollars' worth of ore, were dismantled, and in a few years Stockton was left in a state of nocuous desuetude. And for years was regarded by the mining world as ' an abandoned .mining camp. Time has proved and is proving the fallacy of the opinion thus formed. Stockton today is not what it was a few years ago. Stockton is coming to the front. Several reasons might be advanced to. In a measure, account for the present growth and prosperity of the Stockton mining district, and in this connection we deem it not amiss to mention the great Honerine tunnel project, being run through the district from east to west, and now in some 12,000 feet, and which, in its course, has cut through many powerful fissure veins at great depth, the ore in which is rich in silver and lead. The cutting of these tremendous ore veins, at depth, has demonstrated the wisdom of the undertaking, and d high-grad- e 850-fo- x Every place is supplied with pure This water, which is brought down by pipe line a distance of three and a half miles, at a cost of over $1,600, is used to supply the mill and for all other purposes. All these things noted above have been erected and put in operation within the past two years under the direct, personal supervision of Mr. Gallgher, whose splendid abilities as a mechanic, engineer and miner are recognized ly the company. He was not interfered with or in any way hampered In perfecting every detail of the plant The result Is that every thing connected with the mill and the mine works to a mathematical nicety. quality. This, of itaeir, will give some idea of the tremendous body of ore already blocked out at this point. Theore down to a point below the 700foot level Is a carbonate.
