Extension Service Thirty thousand accidental home deaths occurred in America in 1931. This means if the same record continues, 82 individuals who are alive and well today will be dead tomorrow as a result of home accidents. Is this sufficient cause for a study of accident prevention? Beside the 30.000 deaths it was estimated there were 4,500,000 other accidents. Accidental deaths in the home were nearly a third of all accidental deaths in 1931. Is it any wonder that insurance companies do not consider women good risks; that they would rather insure the industrial worker surrounded by belts, fans, and fly wheels than the housewife; because these people are protected by safety education; by system and by law. Falls arc listed as the most frequent cause of fatal home accidents. These are fatal in three out of four cases with persons over 65 yqprs of age; once in six among children five to 14 and only 13 per cent are fatal to children under five. The most frequent cause of fatal home accidents to children under five are bums, scalds, explosions, also asphyxiation or suffocation; to children five to 14, bums, scalds, explosions; for adults up to 65, all time.
