Thousands of people, in their acthe companying lettera, declared that subdefinitions beautiful they really mitted described homes they loved ao dearly. And the sentences of these letters' were too deadly serious to make anyone think for a moment that even a $250 prize might cause such people to describe what did not exist. One Everybody Hard To Write In fact, aaya Mr. Nelson, it was the personal touch, the creditable failing that made ao many contestants describe their own homes that made them lose the prize. For the association wanted' a 'general definition ..that might be applied to any home. Feature writers took upthe plea for home definition, and satisfactory columns of their editorial comment on the need for a worthy definition of this magic word appeared in newspapers throughout the country. Many teachers had their . entire classes compete in the contest, and real estate boards conducted similar contests locally, sending all definitions submitted to the national headquarters for further judging. Radio stations broadcast the rules and public speakers referred to it. . Lexicographers Protest Immediately after the announcement, dictionary publishers, hurt by the implied insult to their definitions, wrote to many newspapers and defended the descriptions found under the letter H on their pages. , "This comment, says Mr. Nelson "did not upset us. We think that it our terms is a good thing to every little while, especially terms that have to do with our feelings. Certainly it can do no harm, and it may do some good to see a few more definitions of a word that should be more on the public mind than it has been in the past. "A great many things have taken people away from their homes lately, but the real estate men believe that the 10,000 tributes to home ownership received in our contest show that the tide' is turning. People are thinking more of their homes today than for many a day past, and this is a good omen, not only for our business but for the nation." Honorable Mention To Four' The contest judges that included Leonard P. Resume, Detroit, presi dent of the association; Harry Kis sell, Springfield, Ohio, first vice-pre-si dent, and Mr. Nelson gave honorable mention of four of the definitions in the following order: 1.
