Show Friday, May x m. TIIE OGDEN POST PAUL V. McNUTT LEGION WITH ADDRESS STIRS (Continued from page 1.) have been due to our failure to pre pare in time of pence. It is a fine thing for the nations to erect, great monuments to the unknown soldiers after the war is over. It fills one with a profund emotion to stand before these monuments; to stand before our own monument in Arlington; to stand before the simple, dignified Tomb of the French under the Arc do Triomphe; and the one which is carved out of the cliff by the Sea of Nice; and the one which is in the Tomb of Victor Emmanuel in Rome; and the one in Strassburg; and the one in Metz; and the one in Brussels; and the one which is the shrine of the entire British Empire In West-- j minBter Abbey; but it isnt anything j like the emotion which grips one when he stands before row upon row of white crosses which bear this inscription: llcre rests in eternal glory an American soldier known but to God' and realizes that half of those men are there because of the policy which this nation has pursued in the past We are told that the rest of the world will misunderstand us if we are practical in providing defenses. Nonsense! We are not militarists. We arc not swashbucklers. We are not saber rattlers. We want no additional territory, but we do want to safeguard the things which are ours. We can be practical and at the same time retain the spiritual and the material leadership of the world, while we work, while we pray for the day when Mars will fade into the darkness of the night and in its stead will shine a star to guide all men of all nations the Star of Bethlehem. The American legion is finishing its first decade of service. It has given of its energies and of its re sources without stint to the disabled man and to the needy and homeless child. It has tried to serve the community and the state and the Nation. It has not asked for a single thing for itself. It asks for one thing today for more strength in order to render more service. There are men on the outside of the organization who should belong. This is the one place where all men stand on an equal footing, bound together by a tie of comradeship which grows as the years go on. We do not ask a man where he comes from; we do not ask a man about his creed; we do not ask a man about his social position. We only ask him two questions: Did you serve with honor in the World war? And were you an American citizen when you did it? If his answer is yes, he belongs with us, marching in the American pageant of progress down the center of the road toward the dawn of a better day. s. We have been called There is nothing super about the patriotism of the members of The American Ijcgion, but they are patriots They are those who were willing to give all that they have and all that they are to the Nation without thought of rqward save the accomplishment of a high purpose. We have a high purpose. We put it in the preamble of the constitution in order that all might understand and in order that we might carry it on our hearts forever. It is this: We stand for God and Country.
