Show THE OGDEN POST The Ogden Post Kieiel Arrnu, Phone 690 George Mitchley, Editor Published Each Friday 2420 EDITORIAL IIAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALLOW! WISH Within a few hours from the time of the delivery of this issue of The Ogden Post, New Year will be ushered in with all its usual pomp and glory, throughout the world. Ogden City and Weber county will do its share of the celebrating. The event will 1 marked with a general celebration, in which little time will be spent upon the making of resolutions. It will be "eat, drink and be merry for it will be another year." We wish to extend our best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year to all, and hope that the new year will be one of the brightest for residents of this city, county and state that is possible. We have one wish which we hope will be carried out: that is to make the year of 1927 one of the greatest possible boosting for our city. We wish to do our part in doing every thing possible to help Ogden along toward the 60,000 population by the end of 1930. This goal can be accomplished, we believe, if we put our shoulders to the wheel and boost. It is a slogan that every man, woman and child in Ogden should consider as the slogan for the year and the next years to follow: "60,000 in 1930." MEETING THE EXPENSES OF CITY GOVERNMENT The past week has been one of very trying times for the board of city commissioners in arriving at a budget When Mayor for the new year. George E. Browning arrived at his office in the city hall early last Mon- Fully sixty per-ro- nt STATE PRISONERS Abolishing of the parole and probation system in the Utah State prison, and requiring the convicted criminals to serve their full sentences less the usual time allowed for good behavior will be the object of a measure which will probably be introduced at the next legislature by Horace D. eck, a member from Salt Lake coun- -' ty. Every optimistic resident of Ogden has visions of great strides for Ogden during 1927. When one looks over the situation, the basis for this feeling, it seems that optimism is the only thing to use when thinking of our citys future. Many of our merchants were pessimistic prior to the holiday season, and they looked forward to a very poor Christmas trade. But the snowstorm, which will mean so much to the agriculture district next summer, meant very much to the retail trade. One merchant tells us that the holiday trade this year exceeded that of any holiday time for the past four years. He said it was remarkable how, with the coming of the snow, the people seemed to realize that the yuletide season was approaching and it was the time for joyous and optimistic thoughts. The new year will mean the changing of the sky line of Ogden with the new Bigelow hotel and the First National Bank building, and other contemplated improvements In the citys business district, as well as In the railroad yards and the wholesale and manufacturing districts. If a person goes over the new Twenty-fourt-h street viaduct that bridges the railroad yard, and nausea and looks down upon the work that has been completed and is underway, he can not help. but think that there must be something to Ogdens future or the groat railroad trunk lines would not be spending this great amount of money here. The same spirit of progress is noted in the business., district where indications point to an extensive program of building of new and remodeling of stores. The winter months have not interferred with the same extensive building of homes in the residence section, and the early spring will g see a redoubling of the efforts throughout the city. These are few of the things that cause' us to say Ogden will enjoy a happy and prosperous New Year. MERCHANT MARINE A. NATIONAL NECESSITY TO OGDEN In making recommendations for a irogram which would strengthen and luild up an American merchant ma- . rine, Mr. J. C. Rohlfs, The Pacific American Steamship association, San Francisco, recently presented to the United States shipping oard commissioners specific facta which go to the root of the whole shipping problem. Mr. Rohlfs based is opinion on 28 years' experience in vice-preside- designing, building and operating craft of river, bay and ocean-goin- g every description except passenger. "Of greatest and first importance o my mind," he said, is the of an adequate merchant marine as an indispensable aid in time of national emergency. At such time it is extremely hazardous to rely upon foreign merchant ships to supply our navy with necessary fuel, stores, etc., and our nation with indispensable commodities. Dur-n- g the World war our farmers and manufacturers experienced the disas-rou- s. effects resulting from delayed and ruined shipments which accumulated in every terminal warehouse lecause of lack of ocean transportation facilities. "The ship owners know the prob-csaid Mr. Rohlfs, "and have constructive suggestions, all of which have so far been rejected by our legislative bodies, because the farmer, the manufacturer and the main body of our people have, not understood, and do not now understand exactly what the lack of an American merchant marine means, irst, to the nation and, secondly, to main-enan- ce day morning he summoned Commissioners Chris. Flygare and Harman Peery, and told them that he had some suggestions to make regarding the cuts to be made to bring the budget down. ' The suggestions of the mayor regarding the cuts in the matter of the city expense was readily agreed to by the other members of the board. When it was explained that Ogden City has paid more interest upon the bonds for the building of the city hall than the entire building originally cost, and nothing had ever been done to reduce the principal, then it can readily be seen that something must be done and done now. The board shaped its work upon the formulating of the budget to prepare for the taking care of not only the interest but the principal on bonds.
