great commonwealth mon wealth the character study Is doubly interesting simon kamberger damberger liere hereafter aftel we shall use the formal address is a man of in many any parts lie he is first of all a man of tho the plain people ho possesses the rarest of all gifts the faculty of human understanding his heart is as big as all out doors ond and beats in full sympathy with i the cause of tho the common people ile he tells us that he be will be the peoples governor and there Is every reason to believe that he intends to keep his word this too notwithstanding the tact fact that he is a man of wealth the governor is it a self made man tho the chronicle of its his experiences reads like a romance it Is the old old story of the poor boy ot of humble origin carving ing out his own career and eventually finding his bis wa way y to high ot of jewish descent the see sec ond of a family of six children ho he was born in the fine old city of darmstadt germany while still a boy lie he succeeded in saving enough money money to purchase a ticket to america it was in the great american metropolis that he found his first employment the story goes that ills his job was to set up tip pins in a bowling alley but we are not altogether sure on this point at any rate he not only managed to support himself but was able to set aside sufficient means meads to bring the family to the united states sometime later the future governor moved to indiana and engaged la in the mercantile business the family followed and there they made their home but the young man mal always cu n tho the alert for new opportunities migrated to missouri in search of fortune and while in that state stale his naturalization papers were honored and le became beekma a full fledged citizen 0 of the united states in all probability he accepted his bis political faith at the same time tor for he Is a man of fixed opinions and has been a lifelong life long democrat his stay in missouri was not long eventually he moved to wyoming and became manager of an advance supply depot tor for tile the company having under construction the old union pacific railroad lie ile continued in this carcity until the rails of the transcontinental system were joined at promontory point in 1869 then he came to utah to stay governor Eam Dam bergers career in the state of his bis adoption covers a period of forty el eight years he first settled at ogden and engaged in the hotel business for a time he moved subsequently to salt lake city and this place has since been his home it would require a fair sized volume to chronicle in detail his various enterprises during the years that followed the mining industry then in its infancy attracted his attention tor for a time and he was successful in the main in his mining undertakings unlike his fellow democrat uncle jesse knight the exact location of the hidden wealth was never revealed to him in a dream and so ho he was compelled to take miners luck and run the customary risks and chances that haunted the trail of the early prospectors pec tors cut but it developed that mining was to bo be simply a side bide issue with him the governor encountered his chief success in the development of transportation por tation within the state lie he was connected with the construction of one of first railroads railroad and his supreme achievement was the building of the electric line connecting salt lake and ogden this road Is conceded to bo be one of the finest of its kind in the country and stands as a fitting monument to the constructive tive genius of its organizer and operator his hobby for years has been the development of interurban transportation within the state and ho he has been a guiding spirit in tile the completion of other two elec trie lines which connect with the damberger bamberger line at both ends and now nov enable it to extend its to southern idaho on the north and to central utah on the south in connection with ills his railroad and metal mining activities the present governor has been successful in de ve loping extensive coal mining properties and in organizing one of the roost most substantial retail coal companies 0 of the state tho the activities mentioned d together with various other enterprises terp rises in which ho he la is interested make him one of tile the big payroll builders of the state althou although b ills his chief claim to distinction tio n prior to his elevation to the 1 governorship was ills his prominence as a man ot or affairs he be has gaii aund time to serve the people at i times in a public capacity he waa wa a member of the state senate in the 1903 and 1905 sessions and has se arved on the isalt salt lake cit city y school 9 figard oard but J aside irom from those these positions he i d distinguished ls t ln g i ed h himself h lf c ahle 1 if 6 aly f i y a as s a private I 1 raile va t e e citizen i e n d deeply e e y c concerned 0 n e e r ned in fit all matters affecting the public welfare 1 and freely lending its his support port to the 1 in moral oral uplift of the community lie ile is intensely public s spirited pirl ted he la Is a philanthropist anthro of substantial Bub bial i proportions and as such has endeared himself in hundreds of utah homes ho mesi to Illus illustrate citizen 9 pam Bam bergers loyalty to his state we venture to recall ca 11 an incident that liar li anever been fully confirmed A year jr i more ago ile he was w as prominently MCI boned ed as a likely candidate tor for the lilted gilted gilted states sena senate te practical cl ris assumed that lie he could have the nomination tor for the asking at th tha particular time he was on an extein led trip for his health in the west J dies then one day like a hash flash out 0 a clear sky shy came cam e a cablegram from auba puba uba saying that under no n would h he e tie be a candidate tor for the senate no satisfactory explanation for cor this has ever been offered a and no of I 1 inlets it absence the belief came to be generally accepted that havi having seen aith ith his own eyes the conditions surrounding the production ot of sugar on th islands lie he was tearful fearful of the result that would follow were the industries at home 1 I placed in open with the foreign producers that he ae was certain that his party would remove the duty on sugar in accordance with its and that rather ihn to be compelled to choose in alth e event I 1 I 1 of his election between a party on on e A IV 9 I 1 ayd 91 1 voting to pa paralyze aleze one of th ailef I 1 industries n dus tries ot of the state on the other ho he preferred to surrender his ambition and remain a private citizen ile he could neither betray his party nor his state hence ills his decision the governors inaugural was typical of the man himself it was brief and went straight to the point he has promised the people a businesslike administration of the states affairs rai we doubt that hi h w 1 able to accomplish all of the reposed proposed undertakings der takings but it will bo be interesting to note the devel development of his policies and in the meanwhile he should be accorded credit for all good intentions ills his splendid tribute to the administration of ills his predecessor former governor spry was a manifestation of ills his characteristic generosity and of ills his disposition to rise above petty politics and bestow honor where honor Is due it was a stirring endorsement of a great constructive record upon which he ha has pledged himself and the party to make a substantial improvement lie he is playing for high stakes and the element of political risk ts Is great but it ho he wins th the e glory is bound to be commensurate with the achievement tho the governors friends predict lor for him a successful administration the tha business of being the peoples governor Is a big job but the new executive has been doing big things all his me life lie Is messed blessed with an abundant supply of horse sense and has a philosophical turn of mind that should get him over many a patch ot of thin tee ice lie will malee make mistakes ol of course but they will come from honest bonest effort ills his chief difficulty will be to hold his political associates in check this will call for every ounce of leadership that he possesses but he assures us nevertheless that he will be ba the governor and we are arc inclined to think that he will governor bamberger at the outset of his administration enjoys the good will and carries rith him allo atho
