Sue Hodges said doctors found the grapefruit-sietumor in the center of Ins brain following tests to determine the cause of Hodge's severe headaches. He began an immediate regimen of powerful steroids to shrink the tumor and surgeons performed a biopsy. The tumor was malignant and Hodges was told he had less than one year to live. At least 90 percent of these cancers result from long-terexposure to the sun's ultraviolet radiation. Sunlight is also responsible for the wrinkled, blotchy, dry and leathery skin that can make you look old before your time. Regardless of age or skin color, you need to protect yourself from the sun. The Utah Safety Council offers the following suggestions to help reduce skin cancer: BABIES: Infants under the age of six months should never be exposed to the sun. Whenever you outside, cover the baby's go skin with proper protective clothing including: tightly woven, long d sleeved shirts, pants and a hat or sun bonnet. When the baby is six months old. start using sun screen. Choose a waterproof product that is moisturizing rather than alcohol based. CHILDREN: Most children spend more time outside and receive three times more ultraviolet radiation in a year than adults. Regular use of an SPF-1- 5 sun screen throughout childhood and adolescence can reduce the risk of the most common skin cancers by almost 80 percent. TEENS: Some teens are so determined to get a tan that they frequent tanning salons or spend a great deal of time outside. One healthy alternative to this is to use a long-legge- wide-brimm- Farmington fire calls up 29 percent in 97 Susan Tanner Holmes Contributing would put us on call to respond to approximately 645 calls, up from last year's 480. The 62 calls for the month of April mean that Farmington's all volunteer fire department personnel responded to an average of two calls a day. These calls have taken these firemen away from their regular jobs. One of the April fires included a home in W'est Farmington. "The men were there in great time. Last year during April we had 48 calls, that's an increase of 29 per- cent." The calls were closely divided into 37 medical responses and 25 fire related calls. April's increased calls has pushed the calls to an all time high. Last year Farmington's volunteer firemen responded to 140 calls. This year that figure is 188, a 34 percent increase. ADULTS: By the time we become adults, most of us have accumulated enough hours, days and years of sun exposure to cause some damage to our skins. It is still beneficial though, as an adult to use sun protection. Make it an essential part of your day, fitness program and fun. OLDER ADULTS: Since the nsk of skin cancer increases with age, you should examine your skin every three months. Early detection gives you the best chance of a cure, so see a physician without delay if any mole or skin growth changes or if a new one appears. An older person who requires many prescription drugs may be at increased risk of developing an intense skin reaction to the sun. Consult your physician or pharmacist before you go out in the sun if you use medication. For more information on sun protection please contact the Utah Safety Ext. 301. Council at 5 g d radiation treatment. Later tests indicated the treatments had been ineffective and Hodges opted to discontinue the treatments. Sue Hodges said their family is resigned to Hodge's fate, but she still finds herself angry and frustrated with the disease that in many ways has already taken away her husband. She said it has been very hard for the family to live with a man they hardly recognize. The tumor is located in the area of the brain that controls hearing, memory and personality and the effects of the tumor have been devastating 262-540- to the Hodges family. Hodges has lost about 50 percent of his hearing and his short term memory is seriously compromised. But, perhaps the most devastating side effect of the tumor is Hodges loss of himself. The tumor has damaged the part of the brain that controls Hodge's personality and has transformed the once man into a person his family hardly knows. "One minute he is calm and normal and the next minute he is a person I can't even recognize," she said. Other side ei lects of the tumor include: tingling and numbness in his hands and feet, severe headaches caused by the swelling of the brain, nausea. fatigue, memory loss and even arthritic attacks in his joints brought on by the large doses of steroids. In an effort to give the family some normalcy, the Hodges recently took a much needed vacation to Disneyland. Sue said the trip was enjoyable and that everyone took turns pushing the 200 pound Darrell around the park in a wheelchair. She said both Darrell and their family appreciate the outpouring of love and support by Darrell's coworkers and the com REUNION FOR RALPH CANNON DANCE STUDENTS & EMPLOYEES (Families and Friends) SATURDAY; JUNE 14, 1997 5 pm to 7 pm at Ralph Cannon's Home 714 West 3800 South Bountiful Utah (Hwy 09 to 3B0Q S For Questions or Additional information Call CAROL SILVER PARKER 485 4406 Home 581 7234 Work We look forward to seeing you O 10 MOVIES FOR $8 O O SflNDCHSTLE O KIDS SUMMER MATINEES atti- tude, said one neighbor.
