Show Davis County Clipper . cigarette tax increase Staff Writer FARMINGTON The Davis County Board of Health will be cimong those pushing for a hefty hike in the cigarette tax when the State Legislature meets in January. Board members endorsed a letter and resolution which will be sent to legislators calling for at least a 20 cent per pack tax increase. The increase, they believe, will cut the number of young people who start smoking. And cutting into the numbers of youth who smoke is the major goal of the legislation. Kevin Condra, in charge of health education for the county, told the board studies have shown that every 10 cent tax increase per pack reduces youth smoking by 4 percent. And thats a conservative estimation, he said. Some say its as high as 10 In Utah, Condra said, percent. because of the states relatively low rate of young people smoking 4 or 5 percent would be a more accurate estimation. Condra said a full 80 percent of the states residents are m favor of the increase. This is one tax people are supportive of. And while legislators shy from the very phrase tax increase, board members believe theyll have support since a cigarette tax is a user tax. Ron Toth, assistant to Davis County Health Director James Saunders said he sees the tax as a payback. If you want to smoke, you pay your way. The debate m this gling from Canada and Mexico picks up, bootlegging occurs from Indian reservations and from military bases. All these arguments can be shot down, Condra said. The four statements are ridiculous. Other states in years Legislature will not be whether there will be an increase in cigarette taxes, but how much, Condra said. He would like to see a 25 cent increase in cigarette taxes, telling board members, the hike would raise $23 million in revenue for the state. But he recognizes the amount may be anywhere between 4 and a half cents and 25 cents most likely under 20 cents. He said there are 16 lobbyists in Utah representing tobacco interests and while there are 27 lobbyists representing health interests, not all of them focus on programs related to tobacco. Among arguments used by tobac- Academy will be moved to new school district building Susan Tanner Holmes which cigarette taxes have been raised have not see any of these. Many states and some areas of Contributing Writer Canada, have much higher cigarette taxes than Utah, some as high as $1 per pack The legislature will reserve the right to appropriate the funds as they see fit in the last hours of the legislative session, but should the $23 million be raised, Condi a would like about $4 million go towards augmenting funds used for health care and $4 million for substance abuse education residents and history lovers will have the opportunity to buy a piece of the old Academy Bell In a cooperative effort, the Davis Condra told board members smoking drained $114 million from Utahs economy in direct health care costs in 1990. The project estimates with rising costs it could reach $260 million his year,. The project also notes smoking costs Utahs economy $190 million in lost economic productivity each year due to disability and work days missed. co lobbyists to block cigarette tax increases are that interstate smuggling increases, international smug FARMINGTON District, smoking Smoking causes more than 8 out 10 cases of lung cancer There is no cure for lung cancer Nearly 9 out of 10 lung cancer victims die within five years In 1996, an estimated 177,000 new cases of lung cancer will be reported in the U.S. Of these cases 450 will be in Utah In 1996, lung cancer will cause an estimated 158,700 deaths in the U S.; 400 of these deaths will be in Utah Each year, about 3,000 non- - smoking adults die of lung cancer as a result of others cigarettes In smokers who stop smoking when changes are found, lung tissue often returns to . normal Smoking is the most pre ventable cause of death in the U S.
