The event was organized and run completely by Mrs. Brambles sixth grade students who chose this event as a service project. WalkRun for Lung is a pro Friday the 13th was a lucky day for the students at Reading Ever nonce how kids just you know 1 . don't . . . learn stuff? mean the stuff that you . . really want them to learn. That stuff tends to go in one side ot their heads and out the other, only occa- sionally pausing long enough between the ears to register a faint glimmer of recognition ("You mean Im supposed to make my bed every day?"). And dont even mean the stuff you really dont want them to learn. Most of that stutl is pretty easy to trace (around our 1 house, the search usually begins and ends with big brother Joe). I'm talking about the stuff they learn that you dont have any idea how they learned it. And when you find out they know it, its always sort of a surprise. I Recently my friend, Mark, and had the "opportunity" to chaperon a of dance with a church gym-fuThese dances can be interesting for adults, and watching the kids dance can be fun. But when you're 41 and your feet hurt, mostly they are something you just endure. I Elementary. They had the opportunity to raise money to fight lung disease in an exciting event called "WalkRun for Lung. More than 100 students partici ation class in a nursing home. Ive even seen it fairly regularly in my own living room, performed at one time or another by everyone in the Jon. family including over again. From my vantage point on the stage, I felt like I was looking at an overhead shot in a Busby Berkeley musical. It was cool but 1 didn't understand it. So I looked to Mark, who is a couple of generations closer to the age on the dance floor and who teaches high school-ag- e students. "What are they doing?" I shouted above the roar of the Latin music. Fie shrugged. "I dont know, he shouted back. "Ive never seen it before." We watched for a few moments, then I asked: Where do they learn this stuff? Fie shrugged again, and gestured toward one of the back rows of dancers, which included my three teenagers. "Ask them. he said. almost everyone. Well. OK For some reason, I still dont get it the dance, or all of the public fuss over it. And to tell you the truth. I dont really care to. The way I see it. parents don't have to actually know everything that their children know just the important stuff. As long as you've done everything you can to pass that stuff along to your children your values, your standards, the rest of the stuff is your beliefs stuff. And it's OK just . well . for them to know stuff even if you don't. Even if you dont know how they know it. OK. let's try it one more lime: hand, hand, wrist, wrist, shoulder, . did. and they told me all about the Macarena. which I had never even heard of before then. Since that time, however. Ive seen it everywhere: at baseball games, on Oprah." during a parade, at a recre . gram designed to teach participants! the importance of regular exercise' and a healthy lifestyle. It was introduced by the American Lung Association as a means of supporting the ALA's research and educa-- ; tion programs. . The kids shrieked in recognition, and without any coaching or coaxing they formed a series of straight lines from the front of the gym to the back (if we had tried to organize them like that, it would have taken us 15 minutes to establish any semblance of order; four measures after they heard the start of that Latin beat, they were lined up and ready to dance). Now. here's where things really got weird: when the kids started dancing, they started dancing together. Not "together" as in Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Not like they were actually touching each other or anything like that. They danced "together" as in the June synTaylor Dancers. You know chronized.
