Chris Evensen scooted around the left end and galloped to the endzone, but the play was called back because of holding on the opposite side of the play. It was a typical first game with several penalties and miscues, but Bountiful Coach Larry Wall was pleased with his troops. Im extremely pleased with the defense. It was a hot, humid day. I have to take may hat off to Aaron Kuehne on defense; and Wes Patterson was just as important to us on the defensive side as we was offensively by not giving up the big play," the coach said. Besides running the team offensively at quarterback, Patterson also plays as a safety on defense. We have a long way to go and a lot of things to work on. We need to shore up the line, Wall said. Were a little behind because we usually have an extra week to practice before school starts. The big factor in this game was our conditioning. Most teams give conditioning lip service, but our kids really work hard all year. Which describes pretty well the position Woods Cross finds itself after losing to Colosimos Bulldogs Friday night 40-10. Weve got a long way to go, said Wildcat coach John Haning after losing for the first time to Judge in his tenure as Woods Crosss head coach. We definitely looked a little rusty. The Bulldog passing attack, led by quarterback Matt McAffee, ripped the Wildcat defense for 140 yards and three touchdowns to get Colosimos season off to an impressive start. McAffees favorite target was Brock Veltri who used a significant height advantage to frustrate the Wildcat defensive backs. Woods Cross took an early lead in the contest by converting a fumble by Joe Thomason into a 27 yard field goal off the toe of junior kicker Flint Holbrook at the 7:23 mark of the first period for a 0 lead. The fumble was recovered by Clint Evans and gave the Wildcats possession on the Bulldog 30 yard line. The Cats were helped by a face mask penalty against the Bulldogs but could still get no closer than the 10 yard line before settling for Holbrooks kick. The Bulldogs then responded with 37 straight points to dampen Wood Crosss early enthusiasm. Following the Holbrook field goal, Judge scored the games first touchdown after a Woods Cross punt which bounced out of bounds at the Judge Memorial 42 yard line. Featuring the McAffee to Veltri connection, Judge marched to the 14 yard line where Thomason got the call and found the end zone. The series took five plays. The Bulldogs front line dominated the line of scrimmage giving McAffee plenty of time to find 3-- 40-1- 0 Veltri and his other receivers. in our starters. Our problem is depth. With school starting again its the time for teams to put on the pads and go to war. Such was the case as the Davis Darts invaded the Northridge Knights home field and come away with an easy win. As usual in the starting of the football season each team had to get their timing for the game and the Darts were no different as it took the Darts until 9:54 in the second quarter to put up the first touchdown of the year as senior QB Jeff Fowler ran the ball in for the score. From that point on the Darts clearly had the Knights number as they dominated the game, with Travis Bowen getting the second TD with an pass from Fowler with 4:58 left ending the first half with the Darts having a 14-- 0 lead. At the break, the Ridge looked confused with the Darts getting 12 first downs to the Knights 2, while having 192 in total offense to 39 yards fro the Ridge. Clearly the Darts were in for a good night. One of the goals that the Darts wanted to establish was the running game. Leading the running game was Casey Hill and Merrick Jackson as they got the majority of the running plays for the Darts. Hill seemed to take over as the main rusher for the Darts as he accumulated 168 rushing yards for the game. We wanted to establish ourselves in the running game first and that would open up the passing game if we needed it, said Hill. 14-1- 67. 17-1- 5, 7-- 8 or excitement. Usually for the first game of the season, many of the players would have butterflies and this was evident several times during the game as the Darts had a hard time holding onto the ball, as they had 3 fumbles for the game. Hill said that the Darts were no different. "In the first quarter we had a lot of jitters, but the first time you hit someone we settled down to play Davis football."
