Judkins said because of the skills he learned from high school coaches he has been able to travel to every state in the nation because of basketball. He said high school athletes in Utah are extremely talented. Per capita Utah supplies the most athletes to professional sports, he said. Eyestone told of how excited he was when he edged Wayne Pinto of Davis High in a cross country race when Eyestone was a junior in high school. Pinto was a legend in Utah cross country. During a race in Provo my goal was to stay with Pinto as long as possible, he told the audience. When Eyestone edged Pinto at the finish line he was overwhelmed with excitement. I couldnt believe I was so thrilled. it. I went around Wayne Pinto! I shouting, I beat beat Wayne Pinto. Eyestone said Pinto was not too excited, but later they became good friends. Thats the type of thrill high school athletes experience during championships. Its really not much different than the thrill you get from participating in an Olympics. High School activities are the only chances most kids get to experience that type of excitement and thrill, Eyestone said. Hot weather present across Utah means doves that would normally have moved south, because of cool weather, are still here. If low pressure weather patterns move into the state before the Sept. 2 opener, some mourning doves will begin moving south. Division biologists have learned that regardless of the weather, some mourning doves begin to leave Utah about Aug 3. These birds begin their annual southward migration based on the photo period or length of the day. As daylight wanes in the fall, doves are stimulated to move to their wintering aieas in Mexico, and Central and South America. Dove hunters who generally hunt in northern Utah, but become frustrated when few birds are around, should give Utahs southern counties a try. For fishermen, summer fishing is ending and fall fishing is just around the comer. It wont be long before the kokanee are spawning and the leaves are changing, but until then, there is plenty of good fishing to be found. Just a couple of weeks ago. Flaming Gorge Reservoir, which is in Utah and Wyoming, gave up a new Wyoming state record kokanee salmon. The 26 inch fish tipped the scales at 5.73 pounds. The new record holder, Mary Robinson of Fort Collins, Colo., was fishing with her husband when she hooked the trophy. They had caught several other four to five pound fish while trolling in the bays. Lake Powell is very warm this time of the year, but that doesnt stop the strippers from biting. The archery deer hunt is in full swing, and the mourning dove season opens on Monday. Ordinarily the dove hunt would open Saturday, but international treaties with Mexico and Canada require the hunt to start no earlier than Sept. 1. Utah law prohibits the opening of a hunting season on Sunday, so the opener will be on Sept. 2, which is Monday. Fort Buenaventure State Park, in Ogden, is hosting a mountain man rendezvous this weekend. You can take a step back into the past and join in the festivities of the old west when you visit the park. There are hikes to be taken, places for camping, and mountains to climb, so strap on your fanny pack and water bottle and go exploring. Adventure can be as close as the nearest foothill.
