That is the question being asked by disgruntled consumers who are paying as much as 20 cents more per gallon than they would pay in surrounding cities. The answer is simple. Its free enterprise. In spite of the fact that the refineries are in the backyard of the city, and in spite of the fact that gas that is trucked up the mountains costs a lot less per gallon, gas prices in Bountiful remain very high. A quick survey Monday morning showed prices in Bountiful for unleaded regular ranging between $1.25 to $1.29 per gallon at most E . Tuesday, July 16, 1996 2E22a mnmetgvn gas prices so high? Slim Olsons accountant Jim Vincent said he knows that Salt Lake gas prices are lower, but his competition is not in Salt Lake. Salt Lake seems to be having a gas war right now. They are buying at the same price were buying for, but they are selling for less. Their margins must be cut to nothing, he said. Vincent added Youve got to make some money. A dealer cant exchange dollar for dollar and stay in business. A clerk at the Rainbo Oil station in Bountiful said supervisors set the stations. In West Valley prices were an average of $1.19 with a low of $1.16. On Saturday, gas at the Flaming Gorge Maverick sold for $1.09. At a station in Layton the price was $1.19, and at the Rainbo Oil on 3300 S. Main in Salt Lake the price was $1.21. Why the difference? Most locals agreed they charge what the competition charges. If one Bountiful station sells at $1.30 most will follow. If one lowers the price, most w ill follow. J 1 2 5 Why are Bountiful If price and its been kept high. Tim Taylor, merchandising director for Maverik stations said the price of gas is a direct result of competition. Maverik has some advantage as it is not a brand gasoline and Taylor may shop the major refineries for price. The wholesale price is a factor in the price at the pump. The goal of Maverik is to stay about 2 cents less than the competition on charged gas and offer an additional discount for cash purchases. At our 130 stores across the state there are many prices. I know its less in certain areas. We base our prices on local competition, he said. Taylor said customers should see prices dropping steadily over the next few weeks as suppliers have dropped their prices significantly from the peak in May. "Our cost is dropping a fraction of a penny each week, he said. But that may not be good enough, or soon enough for some Bountiful residents. Sanders Contributing Writer A NORTH SALT LAKE handful of concerned citizens appeared at a recent North Salt Lake City Council meeting to protest a request for rezoning of a acre parcel of property located at 443 East-10- 0 North. The land is owned by former city councilniember turned developer Mark Clark. The residents are attempting to stop the city council from rezoning the property from the current 0 single family dwelling zoning to dual family dwelling. The group is also strongly opposed to a proposed change in the citys Gen- eral Plan that would allow dual family units to be built 200 yards above Orchard Drive. The General Plan currency states that this area should be developed primarily for single family homes. Mark Lee, Spokesperson for the neighborhood, told Mayor Clare Jones and the city council that residents of the area believe that a change in zoning would compromise the lifestyle of the neighborhood, and go against the wishes of the citys General Plan. Lee said many area residents feel the rezoning is incompatible with the needs and wants of the area. Lee said the units would reduce neighborhood property values, increase traffic and add children to an already overcrowded see APARTMENT pg. South Davis Fire Chief Terry Graham said the investigation is continuing, but at this time, it appears children were at fault in the blaze which caused an extimated $20,000 to $25,000 in damage. The fire began in some bushes outside one of the buildings. Graham said the fire quickly spread up the side of the building and into the roof. One apartment also suffered smoke damage. Graham said there was a similar fire about two years ago in the same area. One eyewitness said the bushes just went up in flames appearing to be the burning bush of the Old Testament. Three engines companies and about 30 firefighters quickly doused the blaze, but it took time to clean up the damage and put out hot spots. However, since there is no season on raccoons and there was no weapon used, the golfer was not arrested. Raccoons are considered pests by many and can be dangerous if placed in a confrontational situation. They are known to get into garbage cans when they live near urban areas. German said there are few raccoons seen at Bountiful Ridge, although there has been just about any wild animal you could name sighted at the course. Deer are the most prevalent, although there have been moose and even a mountain lion sighted. German said hed like to see some kind of punishment for the golfer involved. As of Monday afternoon he was waiting to hear from fish and game officials. COURTNEY SELLERS have no idea why gas prices are higher in Bountiful, I just know they are.
