These funds encourage business and private sector partnership development in education. Each project submitted by any school must directly impact student learning as it relates to the core curriculum and enhance educational excellence. In announcing the selections, Allen underscored the great importance of business partnerships and parent participation, stating that companies such as Chevron, U.S. West, Barnes Bank and many other Davis County businesses as well as PTAs and school community councils give added punch to fund raising dollars. In one school. South Davis Junior High, a teacher who was awarded the prestigious Davis School District $1,000 Horizon Award as Teacher of the Year, parlayed it to a $2,000 addition to his department as a result of the matching funds. The cheerleaders won in songleading and nonmount divisions. The cheerleaders were announced the state songleading champions with one of the highest scores given at the competition. The VHS cheerleaders qualified for national compedivitition in Jacksonville, Florida in the sion. The division consists of intense tumbling and cheer. On Dec. 2, the cheerleaders also competed in the non-mou- nt non-mou- nt USA regionals at Cottonwood High. There the girls took first place in songleading. The cheerleaders qualified national competition in Anaheim, Calif. Two cheerleaders competed in state individuals at the University of Utah on Dec. 6. Tawnie Wood received a second place trophy in cheer and Haley Berman received a second place trophy in songleading. Advisors for the cheerleaders are Toni Bauman and Pat Wood and the tumbling coach is Travis Hampshire.
