Show JU893rpMC5 Logo designed State plans anniversary celebration Utah will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its settlement in 1997, and the state announced its preparations by creating a living logo featuring a pioneer family moving alongside a covered wagon, at This is the Place State Park. According to Elliot Cameron, chairman of the Utah Pioneer Sesquicentennial Celebration Coordinating Council, The Spirit of Pioneering logo reminds us of the people who settled in the Utah Territory nearly 150 years ago. Their hard work and sacrifices will be recognized in 1997. The council is making preparations now to f ensure that Utahns enjoy the celebration. Max J. Evans, director of the Division of State History, said the council wants to help communities and organizations get ready for 1997. He reported that $75,000 in grant it money will be available to help non-prof- organizations mark historic pioneer trails or conduct activities which reflect the Pioneer Spirit. Grant applications are available by calling the Sesquicentennial office at 533-359We anticipate that grant money will increase with fees from the licensing of the sesquicentennial council logo, added Evans. The logo was inspired by the art work of Utah school children who participated in a logo conSpirit of Pioneering 1847-199- 7 test earlier this year. More than 290 students participated in the contest, said Rhonda Greenwood, council coordinator. She said that pioneer children faced many obstacles during their journeys to Utah, and the children who participated in the contest showed courage as well when they submitted their art for the contest.
