The Hatch house, 1935 S. 866 West, has become a favorite target of teens who come late at night to vandalize it. Most come in carloads from the Salt Lake area because they know the house sits unoccupied. Its rundown and the yard is unkempt. But the kids have become brazen recently, jumping neighbors fences during the day. That has neighbors worried enough that with the citys backing they've formed a committee to clean and board up the property and they've offered to help police by frequently checking on the house. Those cheers were the culmination of days of intense effort on the part of the Bountiful High School Advanced Placement (AP) History classes. Harris is the much loved AP history teacher at Bountiful High. Without a doubt he is the first Davis County teacher to be nominated for president by a group of enthusiastic students who say he has helped them to love history. In a typical history teacher answer Harris said of the nomination. Lyndon Johnson said If drafted I will not run. I say, if drafted Ill think about it. Harris said he is surprised and pleased by the honor. Isnt it interesting how a hard course bonds people, he said. Students claim they really had to study to get ready for the AP History test. But at the same time they had the energy to design a special commemorative get it printed and sell 150 of the shirts to members of the class. There were 130 Bountiful High seniors who took the test. Of those about 120 had their Cal Harris on. Ken Safeten did the lettering on the shirt and Steven Norman did the picture of Cal Harris. Students said the sketch depicts one of the most famous and well Harris teacher recognized Cal Harris poses. The reverse of the shirt says Minus Ten Senator. Harris has often told his students that if he were president he would control the Senate just as he controls the class by telling them Minus ten (points), when they get out of line. for The group made a set of Harris and his wife and presented the shirts to them in the front office of Bountiful High. When Harris walked out of the office about 120 students wearing the shirts were waiting for him and gave him a standing ovation. Then Friday night after the stomp at Bountiful High the students planned to sleep out in the front and back yard of the Harris home in Kaysville. It has been a class tradition that they sleep over at Camp Harris after the AP History test. He cooks them breakfast. Students said the sleep over went well. The police only showed up one time and that was not because of something they did. But the big day was Saturday morning when they came to the state capitol for a Harris for President rally on the front steps. There was a nomination speech by a student, Ben Kendrick, and an acceptance speech by Harris. In his nomination speech Kendrick said, If we do not learn from history's mistakes, we will continue to make them in the future. Describing Harris he said, His grandparents were homesteaders in Kansas. The land in question for the proposed subdivision is adjacent to the zone change area considered last July for a possible location of a second Dick's Market. The land for the Dick's Market proposal isnt part of this development, City Planner Blaine Gehring said. This has nothing to do with that land considered for a zone change last summer. Last July the council denied a zone change request for 9.3 acres of residential land from single-famil- y to commercial near 2200 S. and Orchard Drive. The unanimous decision came after a hotly contested public hearing which lasted more than two hours. And with the housing shortage this will be a good project for Bountiful. The developers will now need to come back to the planning commission and the council for final approval for the 70-lot multi-lo- t development would be an attractive asset for this part of Bountiful and would not conflict with the commercial or single subdivision before construction can begin.
