Show A8 DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER Tuesday, November 9, 1993 Clean Air Act Amendments to affect all car owners Implementation of the Clear Air Act Amendments of 1990 will affect all car owners by the end of the decade, the National Automobile Dealers Association said. The act mandates that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issue regulations on its implementa- tion, many of which will affect motor vehicles and the motor vehicle service industry. The regulatory debate will focus on enacting legislation that industry, environmentalists and the general public will support. All Americans want clear air and a wholesome environment, but that will mean sacrifices and higher costs for industry and consumers, NADA said. Currently, eight out of ten motorists pump their own gas and do not even bother to check engine oil level regularly. Dirty car engines pollute the air, and many unsafe cars are on the nations highways as a result of improper maintenance. Every car owner can contribute significantly to a cleaner environment and save money by doing two things performing regular and periodic safety and maintenance checks on the cars you own or drive. 1 Simple adherence to maintenance schedules outlined in vehicle owners manuals would contribute to a cleaner environment, save money in costly repair bills and safe lives. Automobile dealers can provide car owners with a maintenance schedule tailored to local driving conditions. NADA recommends that motorists regularly take their car to a dealership or repair shop and have the brakes, lights, tires, wipers and fluid levels inspected, so that problems can be corrected before they become serious. The National Car Care Council estimates that 50 per cent of all vehicle accidents in the United States are caused by unsafe vehicles that have not received basic maintenance. October is National Car Care Month, reminds NADA and motorists that this is a perfect time to have your car thoroughly checked over and make sure that proper basic maintenance hasnt been neglected. As winter approaches, harsh weather and falling leaves become potential road hazards without good tires, a prop erly adjusted suspension system, good brakes and tight steering. Motorists should be aware of the increased demands of winter driving on vehicle engines. A seasonal tune-u- p can ensure that your car is to the up challenge. The message is simple: proper maintenance saves money and contributes to a cleaner environment because cars help clean-runnin- g reduce harmful emissions and help prevent highway fatalities.
