Howells cited such projects as the "Junior Jazz Program," which brings out 55,000 Utah kids from 8 to 18. Jazz members also teach in 50 basketball clinics, "an number in the unprecedented National Basketball Association" Howells said. He also mentioned the Jazz and Geography Program," in which 450 area teachers plot the course of the team as they travel during the season to teach youngsters geography. Jazz members are regular participants in the "Toys for Tots" program and helped out in a relief effort for Somalia. "A Dan Jones Poll showed we don't do enough to toot our own horn," Howells said. Speaking of the team, Howells said he's optimistic about where it's going. "I'd be less than honest, if 1 didn't say I was disappointed," in last year's performance. He said the Olympics and the All Star Game tired John Stockton TROVERSY: Should older people either by choice who are retired share their time and or otherwise expertise as volunteers? On the face of it, the prospect sounds perfect. It gives older folks something worthwhile to do. It also provides an outlet for their unused skills. But after discussing this with several people over the past three months, I came up with an interesting set of opinions that Id like to share with you now. While most of those who spoke with me agreed volunteering is, in and of itself, an excellent concept, it has its negative sides, as noted below: 1. Volunteering, said many of the seniors, is a way to get unpaid, expert services without having to incur employee costs. 2. Volunteering is a way of filling gaps for jobs either no one wants to do, or no one wants to pay for. 3. Volunteering is all right if thats what people want to do. But if it fills time that could be spent looking for other jobs or starting their own small business, then it should be avoided. 4. Volunteering isnt always the rewarding experience they tell you about. You often have to deal with supervisors who can be overbearing to what they consider unpaid labor. 5. Volunteers rarely are made to feel appreciated. On the plus side: 1. Volunteering gets you out of the house and back with people. 2. Volunteering is a way of learning something new that you could later put into a job search. 3. Volunteering takes your mind off your own problems. 4. Volunteering is a way of giving something back for all your own blessings. 5. Volunteering gives the day some purpose. But this year looks great, Howells said. The only thing Stockton and Malone have left to achieve is an NBA championship, Howells said, and he believes they and the rest of the team are hungry for one. Howells said after Stockton broke his leg, prior to the Olympics he didn't play at 100 percent. And Center Mark Eaton had trouble during the season with his knee. Howells said team members take some security in knowing Eaton is there to block the opposition. 2ff t9 5T 127 English sand PG.15 turned around by the opportunity to be a part of the jam. The Jazz has the smallest market of any professional basketball team, but as a result, team members feel closer to the community than in many areas, Howells said.
