Dear oi' Mom to be honored Like the old margarine commercial in which the matronly woman says, Its not nice to fool sons and Mother Nature, daughters everywhere should be reminded, Its not nice to forget Mother. The person who soothed the minor ills, hurts and helped ease the bent feelings in jilted fourth grade love affairs will be honored this Sunday. During this Equal Rights Amendment period, however, the honor could be bestowed upon either the mother or the father. This Sunday, though, is reserved for the person who first introduced you to the world, a person who possesses the love and caring only a mother can have for a child. In most families, shes the one to mend the torn jeans, dress, or shirt. Shes usually the first to apply the tender loving care, and a bandage, to scraped knees. Fathers are not to be forgotten 1980-8- 1 either for their kindness and understanding; their day will come later in the year on June 15. Anna M. Jarvis, who lived from 1864 to 1948, is considered the founder of Mothers Day. She was a spinster who remained extremely attached to her mother, Mrs. Anna Reese Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia. Two years following her mothers death in 1905, Miss Jarvis told friends of her intention of starting a Mothers Day. Because she was concerned over the neglectful treatment of mothers by adult children, she began a letterwriting campaign to congressmen, businessmen and members of the clergy. A year later on May 10, 1908, the first Mothers Day observance was held in a church service held at Miss Jarvis request in Grafton. Although the service was a special tribute to her mother alone, Miss Jarvis idea struck deeper than she envisioned. first The Mothers Day proclamation was issued by the West Virginia governor that same year with Oklahoma and Washington following suit. The Mothers Day International Association was incorporated on December 12, 1912 to promote and encourage servances meaningful ob- of the event. In 1914, Congress unanimously passed a resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mothers Day. President Woodrow Wilson issued his Mothers Day Proclamation on May 9. The following year, President Wilson was authorized to proclaim Mothers Day as an annual known suggestion in 1872 to hold a Mothers Day as a day dedicated for peace. Fifteen years later, Kentucky schoolteacher Mary Towles Sasseen began Mothers Day celebrations. Another attempt in 1904 also failed to catch the nations attention when Frank E. Hering of South Bend, Indiana launched a campaign for a Mothers Day observance. of the origin, Regardless Mothers Day has evolved into a day of honoring mothers, grandmothers, aunts and mothers-in-laas they all are worthy of the accolades reserved for motherhood. w completion before occurring school resumes this fall, Behunin said. Board clerk Bill Jewkes said the figures as approved represent a conservative estimate: As we get into these, we may have to adjust later. The i districts 1979-8- 0 budget is million with capital outlay comprising $4.2 million. Three million dollars of the capital outlay budget; however, is through the sale of bonds approved in a 1978 bond election, Jewkes said. The majority of the $3 million is going toward the Castle Heights School construction and land acquisition for future school sites. He projects a $1.5 million capital outlay budget for the 1980-8- 1 school year for such items as retirement of debt projects service, remodeling and instructional equipment for the classroom. A certain amount of the funds are apportioned to schools depending on the enrollment for miscellaneous classroom equipment, Jewkes said. The board unanimously approved the requests Thursday night after Behunin gave his recommendations that trimmed some $225,000 off the schools requests. Weve spent a lot of time Utah coal has been designated to fuel two coal gasification plants which are being planned in California. The plants represent a growing interest by energy firms to prove the feasibility of using synthetic fuel to produce electricity. Another reason the plants are being built is to reduce the amount of natural gas used to produce electricity, according to the officials for the projects. The federal government has mandated this reduction to occur by 1990. One plant is being built in San Bernadino County near Daggett. The plant is being through the combined efforts of the Electric Power Research Institute, Texaco Inc., Southern California Edison national observance. Miss Jarvis successful attempt at establishing a day honoring mothers was the fourth such attempt. Julia Ward Howe made the first coming up with what we think is in the best interests of the district, Behunin said. Board member Asa Draper told the superintendent, I think youve chosen wisely on all of the projects. Carbon High led the appropriations list in receiving $197,000 for various projects. Included within the approved requests is an expenditure of $100,000 for the construction of a baseball field for the school. The companies sent requests for bids to 87 coal companies, and had 27 respond, Tom Reed of SCE said. Of those, they narrowed it down to one Utah coal company. The selection is not final, he noted, as the comapny is doing a test on 500 tons of the coal. Bob Crotch, also of SCE, said the cost of the project will be $300 million, of which $125 million has been contributed by the four companies. A second similar plant is being studied by Mountain Fuel 30-d- ay Resources, Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Mono Power Co. and the Conoco Coal Development Company. The proposed site of the coal gasification plant, which will use Carbon County coal, is near Collinsville in Solano County, Calif. This plant will cost an estimated $800 million to build PG&E company officials said. According to officials at both companies neither plant will have a serious impact on the environment. The Enviromental Impact report stated that the team found no significant problems. The Daggett plant, scheduled to be completed in 1983, would require the use of 1,000 tons of coal a day. The Collinsville plant, with a tentative completion date in the late 80s, would require 17,000 tons a day.
