' Bikakis and his wife Mae retired Saturday night as owners and managers of Nicks Cafe west of East Carbon. Bikakis came from Greece in 1921 at the age of 13 years to join his father in Sunnyside. He said he worked there several years with his father in the mines. The family then moved to Salt Lake City and later back to Price. Bikakis worked at the New Queen City Cafe in Price as night manager and cook for several years. while in Price, he married Mae Pappas. Nick and Mae moved to Columbia in 1940 as owners and operators of the Columbia Confectionary. During the next four years Bikakis and his friend Nick Galanis built the original Nicks Cafe. Bikakis said he and Galanis were partners for 15 years until Galanis sold his interest in the business. At times business has really gone down in the rocks. But we In 1930, stayed and carried on the best we knew how. Bikakis said. Another hardship came when the original Nicks Cafe burned down ten years ago and it had to be rebuilt, Bikakis said. Mrs. Bikakis said During the last coal strike, business went down. There was nothing we could do but sit and wait for the strike to end. Never in 40 years have we taken other jobs. We have managed to make enough to keep it going, Mrs. Bikakis explained. Bikakis said he has enjoyed the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.
