The Sunbirds, a group of three local aces, were the highlight attraction of the airshow and proved to be more than proficient in their aerobatic maneuvers. Even though the Sunbirds have only performed at two previous airshows, they are somewhat of a novelty attraction because of the type of planes they fly. Each member owns his own 1946 vintage Swift which are now collectors items. Sunbird leader Douglas Kimball, a BYU professor from Provo, said it was the love of the plane that brought the group together. Weve only been doing aerobatic maneuvers as the Sunbirds for two years, but I met Clay 10 years ago when I got lost over Provo Airport and he led me in. Clay Beesley, a crane operator at Geneva, is the right wingman for the Sunbirds and has spent more than 1,000 hours in the Swift. Left wingman is engineer Bob Bingham of Bailey Controls Company from Price who has logged more than 400 hours in the Swift. Kimball said the maneuvers the team performed were not particularly dangerous as long as someone didnt make a mistake. We do it because we like to and its a lot of Price, Utah a.
