The PEO Sisterhood is a philanthropic and educational organization interested in bringing to women increased opportunities for higher education. It was founded in 1869 on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan University. The PEO Sisterhood is now an international organization with over 4,850 chapters and 200,000 members. The Sisterhood maintains four educational philanthropies, chief among which is Cottey Junior College for Women, a fully accredited liberal arts college at Nevad, Missouri, owned and supported by the Sisterhood since 1927. Cottey College is one of the top two - year womens colleges in the country. At Cottey, classes are small and contact between most faculty members and students is frequent. With a student - faculty ratio of only ten students for every faculty member, individual attention to the extent each student needs it can be a reality. In the academic year 1978-7more than 90 percent of the faculty at Cottey has the Ph.D. or another appropriate terminal degree in the areas of fine arts and physical education.
