Physical therapy is the practice of treating disease and weakness through physical remedies such as massage and exercise. At the Price Care Center Steve Ord 15 d supplements these traditional remedies with other treatments involving high frequency sound waves and hot wax. And Ord blends all of his techinques with plenty of attention and encouragement. Joey Neil is one of Steves youngest patients. Joe is part of the Ann Self School program and receives physical therapy from Ord on an out - patient basis. Joey suffers from Downs Syndrome which hinders normal mental and physical development. Downs Syndrome occurs when there is an balance of unequal chromosomes. Parents should start a child on a special program as soon as it is evident that something is wrong and the child is slow in his development. Two weeks ago now he can Joey was not sitting sit by himself. Ord said. In Joeys case there are reflexes that must be forgotten and new ones to learn. Theres the Moro reflex, explained Steve, which must be forgotten before a child can learn to sit. The Moro reflex is the throwing of the body backwards when commonly treated with this type of therapy. Another treatment for arthritis is the hot wax treatment. Ord explained that the wax is heated 130 degrees. to approximately The hand is then dipped into the wax. The wax can be hotter than water without burning due to the specific gravity of the wax. Water at 130 degrees will burn, remarked Ord, but by using wax we can get more heat onto the affected area without burning. All of these techniques are designed to make life easier and healthier for patients of all ages. Ord sees physical therapy as a tool for changing the role of care centers. Some residents are here because they have no place else to go. On the other hand, however, we have a patient here who will leave today who had a fractured hip. She just couldnt take care of herself so she came here during her recovery and will now go back home. The center should be a place where older people can come for help and once helped, can then leave. The center for many people should be a rehabilitation center and shouldnt be thought of as an end." Certainly the Price Care Center is not an end for Steve Ord. dont want to limit myself I by centering my practice around one area ot physical therapy, said the man who graduated second in his class at Baylor University in Houston. My long range goal is to go into sports medicine and treat injuries. sports-relate- d Stroke patients also have some things in common with a child suffering from Downs Syndrome. Both patients have problems with their extensor thrust reflex. Ord explained that if you touch a babys foot, he will automatically extend his legs. The lack of this reflex in stroke patients makes it difficult to walk. Both types of patients must overcome problexiis with these primitive reflexes before they can walk. In the case of a patient with a broken hip, the patient must let the hip joint strengthen and then must exercise it. Ord said there are different schools of though about how long a patient should be off the hip prior to the exercise. In the Army we had them up in three or four days, walking, remarked Ord. There are pros and cons favoring the immediate walking and also of waiting. Since Im not a doctor, I must do what the doctor feels is best for that patient. Joey Neil, at benefit Ords from presence at the school. Residents of the Center who have arthritis and similar maladies can benefit from Dia Thermy treatments. Dia Thermy is a deep heat treatment utilizing a machine which produces ultra high frequency sound waves. These sound waves are sent into the muscle and a deep heating effect is the result. Athletes also are months, is one of Steve's youngest patients and responds well to physical therapy. ...Techiques are designed to make life easier and healthier for patients of all ages.
