Although not known as an active participant in sports himself, even in his younger days, Matt always held an interest in the sports activities of the county and was a willing sponsor for teams throughout the years. His softball team won the Helper Club county league championship for the past three yrs., he took his team of last summer to a national tournament in Virginia after the team had finished second in the regional meet in Denver. One of his Helper Club teams won the Helper invitational basketball tournament in past years and he sponsored an entry in the Helper recreation league for a number of years. He has sponsored numerous bowling teams both for men and women and the trophy case at the Helper Club is filled with softball, bowling and basketball trophies acquired through the years as well as many momentos of tournament action locally and nationally. Matt was president of the Carbon Softball Association for several years until faltering health required him to give up the position only after the popular sport had caught on throughout the area and as many as 16 teams were entered in the county league. Along with his team sports activity, Matt was an avid outdoor sman who enjoyed fishing and hunting and his presence on the local sports scene will be missed. George Minick and Rick Bakker were cited by the conference selection committee for the honor, both freshmen. Minick came to CEU from Washington D.C. where he played for Frank Ballou High School in the competitive prep cage activity in the nations capital city. His quickness, ability to get into the air and scoring ability were real assets to the Eagles in a season that did not go too well in conference play. Bakker, a steady performer from Jordan High School in Salt Lake County, Coach Curt Jensons prep and school, was first team for the Beetdiggers before coming to CEU. He has been an aggressive rebounder, a good scorer and his steady play throughout the season was one of the Eagle strong points game after game. Conference figures also reveal that Karl Anderson, the Provo High graduate on the Eagle squad, placed second in free throw averages for the season. Anderson, who was used in a reserve role by Coach Jenson, had a .885 success rate from the free throw line. normal Sage hens, relatively easy birds to hunt, are found in large flocks living in sagebrush areas where terrain is not too steep. They are slow flyers and when flushed usually fly strait away. The season begins in and is September short five to seven days. Birds should be dressed soon after being taken and if make fare.
