In elections, anyone can run without any party affiliation and have a reasonably good chance of winning. This means that any candidate is elected more on merit and ability than on political party membership. This is the type of government we need, not people who may not be best suited for the position but who win simply because they are Republican or Democrat. non-partis- GPvmii:jv by Uoyd Mullican from duties and Its good to know that our city fathers keep us all so about what is going on in our city. It was nice to find out from the paper that local elections have now reverted back to partisan voting. This was voted on and passed by the city council recently and then the public was notified via the attend. No notice was ever given to the general public that partisan elections were being considered. Surely this must be to someones advantage. In partisan elections, the candidates are nominated by the major opposing political factions. In this case, it boils down to Republicans and Democrats. Oh, sure, anyone can run on an Independent ticket, but has very little chance because the candidates backed by the parties are strongly supported and aided by the major factions and most party members feel obliged to support their partys selection. Only 10 days to Christmas Eve. Fll admit Fve had a hard time getting into the holiday mood. This year seems more restless than most Christmases weve seen for a long time. There have to be good things happening somewhere. Surely there are those who still care about their neighbors and believe in the good things of the world. Christmas is a special time... a time for thinking of others, and giving. Supposedly, thats what its all about. But I sometimes think the giving part has gotten out of hand as Junior expects and usually receives one of every toy made. I read a Dear Santa letter recently where the first grader said Dear Santa, Bring me simply, money! I believe in giving, alright, but for me, at least, its not the price of the gift, nor the famous store from which it came-b-ut its the thought and the Love that came with it. A tree piled high and stockings bulging with gifts, without that necessary ingredient, cant begin to touch a tiny gift from heart to heart. Experts tell us that there is more depression and more suicides in December than any other month. Its tough to be lonely any time, but its even rougher when there is no one to fuss over at Christmas. Its hard to enjoy Christmas and experience the true Christmas spirit alone. Christmas is a time of Love. Love is the reason we celebrate. He whos birthday we remember spoke often of Love... Thy neighbor... The stranger within your gates... And your enemy. W e are known as the Brotherhood of Man. Each different, yet, with many of the same needs. We need friends to confide in. We need to feel that we are needed: that our contributions to life are valuable to others. And it fulfills a need in our own scheme of things when we, in turn, are needed by others. Taking time to be a friend isnt always easy. There are at least a dozen other things we could be doing, but in my opinion, nothing can top it on importance. Christmas was, and still is, a gift of Love. newspaper. So far as I can find out, no one in town was asked his or her opinion on this matter. When criticized on anything, our councilmen always say If you want to voice your opinion, come to council meeting. The UEA statewide class size survey was taken in public schools Oct. 1, when teachers were asked to report enrollment totals from their official rollbooks on that date.
