Their big hang-u- p the concern of the Japanese people for Emperor Hirohito, that he would not be tried as a war criminal, that he would retain his power. Ultimately they realized that he would have to take orders from the victorious powers. I remember that at this time we were feverishly shifting our next move from an assault operation to our responsibilities connected with landing occupation forces. I remember a dispatch telling of a Japanese acceptance of terms of unconditional surrender and a delegation that would fly to Manila to receive instructions from General Douglas MacArthur who had been appointed supreme allied commander for the occupation of Japan. Not all military leaders were jubilant about the process of peace : taking place. I remember one of the few commodores in the Navy, Commodore Powell, was an executive on our staff. He was very irrate that we were proceeding with occupation steps. He wanted to go on fighting. He wanted to attack the Japanese Islands and totally defeat them. Regardless of his wishes, we pulled out of Subic Bay in the Fhillipine Islands bound for Tokyo Bay and the end of World War IL We had some top military leaders aboard our flagship as we entered Tokyo Bay, namely, Generals Hall, ESchelberger, Admiral Richard E. Byrd and others. Admiral Richard E. Byrd was on a mission of naval intelligence. I had the great privilege of having a private conversation with this great leader and explorer on dedr of our ship when we compared a pair of Japanese binoculars I had liberated with a pair of U.S. binoculars he had. Japanese intelligence was not asleep. They knew of our plans for the assault of Japan. They were ready to fight to the finish. We would have lost hundreds of thousands of men in the conquest of Japan. My opinion is that, although the atomic bombs dropped on Japan were a tragedy, they were necessary to bring Japan to its knees and save many more lives than were lost at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Tomorrow is V-- J Day. I remember! I was there! me. Bishop Wesley Sorenson presided and conducted the services.
