Intersection Needs Signs To Avoid Future Mishaps Another accident at 100 North and 100 East in Salina? What will it take for authorities to recognize a problem intersection? Last year a young lady was injured at this same intersection. This year a baby was injured along with the adults who were hurt. Because there are no stop signs, the only way officers can legally place blame for accidents is to ascertain who got to the intersection first. One can tell by looking at the dents in the cars and the position of the cars following the accidents. Wouldnt it be safer for everyone if a stop or yield sign were placed at the intersection so that at least one flow of traffic knows for certain who has the right of way? Residents of Salina are getting used to the fact that this intersection is dangerous and usually slow down when approaching it. Tourists, however, especially at night, do not realize that the intersection has no stop or yield sign for traffic coming in any direction. It seems obvious that traffic accidents are inevitable in those circumstances. The accidents that have occurred there in the last year seem to bear that out. For- tunately the accidents have only hurt human life not taken it . . . yet. 28-3- It seems that some politicians only make headlines in connection with fraud, corruption and scandal. More and more today, nearly every time we look at a paper or turn on the TV, there is some official at some level of government involved in criminal or unethical activity. Not long ago, there was the alleged sex scandal on Washingtons capitol hill, which has now been admitted to by two members of Congress, and now there is another purported sex scandal in California involving the mistress of a dead millionaire and several so called high officials. There was Watergate and there was Abscam and more recently, the resignation of the Democratic party chairman in Utah over supposedly misuse of party funds. Also there were allegations against a S.LC. official for using his office for personal business purposes. What is it that causes all of these headlines? Are these persons criminals or do they go wrong through some unknown influence of being in public office? Is avarice an occupational disease? Now, there is a dispute going on between the state of Utah and Lowdermilk Co. concerning the amount of money charged by Lowdermilk Co. for doing flood control woric. The state claims that the bill is too high by $1.1 million dollars, yet the state hired this company to do the work apparently only by verbal contract. Perhaps it is too high, but the woric was done and the bill is due. To get themselves off the hook, the state now wants to raise sales tax and gas tax to pay for state flood damage. I fully understand there was a lot of damage and it has to be paid for, but it seems odd to me that so much tax has to be raised since the state will only have to bear the burden of 25 percent of the cost and the federal government will pick up the tab for 75 percent through reimbursement to the state of Utah. Not only that, after the flood damage is paid for, the tax raise will remain in effect and fatten the state coffers. This is what happened when state sales tax was first introduced in the state and has gone up ever since. So, at whose expense is this tax being raised? Why, yours and mine, of .: ! vanished. , Castle Valley Show Tonight at Dusk Thq Castle Valley LDS Stakes are presenting their annual Castle Valley Pageant, again this yfear July 0 beginning at 8:30 p.m. Held on a hill just below Des Bee coal mines and surrounded to the south and east by miles of breathtaking Castle Country, the pageant portrays the trials and triumphs of some of the first settlers of the valley who were directed by LDS Resident Brigham Young to homestead the area. ' . After arriving he story goes on to tell of encounters with Indians and Uoyd Mullican it. We hope the proper authorities will take a serious look at putting up a stop or yield sign at the intersection to prevent a future tragedy. . by with nearly 24 hours of television blaring at us everyday, and all the plays and movies, plus uncountable books on every subject imaginable, sometimes its rough to come up with something totally original. I have to agree with Josh Billings, who tersely remarked, About the most originality that any writer can hope to achieve honestly, is to steal with good judgment. This week Im borrowing some gleanings from the log of a states Motor Vehicle Department accident reports that tell it like it is . . . Or, Really, Officer, you wont believe this, but , . Coming home, I drove into the wrong house, and collided with a tree I dont have. I thought my window was down, but found out it was up when I put my hand through A pedestrian hit me, and went under my car. The guy was all over the road. I had to swerve a number of times before I hit him. I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-laand headed over the embankment. In my attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole. I was on my way to the doctors with rear end trouble when my universal joint gave way, causing ' me to have an accident. An invisible car came out of nowhere, struck my vehicle, and . . . the settlers struggles to tame the frontier. The Indians were given a Book of Mormon which the settlers told them was about the Indians own heritage. The pageant activities and advantages include live entertainment, real wagons, buggies, cattle, etc.; excellent and sound, lighting original music and free parking. The pageant scene is located three miles north of Castle Dale which is 30 miles south of Price. The event is free and open to the public. I told the police that I was not injured, but on removing my hat, I found that I had a skull fracture. I saw the slow moving, sad faced old gentlemen as he bounced off the hood of my car. The indirect cause of this accident was a little guy in a small car with a big mouth. I was thrown from my car as it left the road. I was later found by some stray cows in a ditch. The telephone pole was approaching fast I was attempting to swerve out of its path when it struck my front fender. I was unable to stop in time and my car crashed into the other vehicle. The driver and passengers then left immediately for a vacation with injuries. Well, thats my offering for this week. After all, the real purpogi pf books, or newspapers, or colurpns like mine, is to trap the mind into doing its own thinking, isnt it? i Members of the Salina Ridinz Club fared well at the Days of 47 Rodeo this past week.' 0 Gregory Noyes, Allen Gumey Brent Robins, Lawrence May, Shry-el Baker and Ralph Baker, their wives and families all attended the rodeo and the men participated in the Wild Cow Milking Contest. Robins and May came in first place in their heat and were awarded a silver belt buckle with Days of 47 inscribed on it. course. The latest scandal is being looked into by an Iowa congressman. Of the 700 million pounds of cheese released by President reagan for distribution to the poor and needy, it appears that about 30 percent or 210 million pounds of cheese was siphoned off into illegal channels. Some by theft, but most by people visiting more than one distribution point and collecting much more than their share. Of course there was some discrimination and some charitable organizations even tried to collect donations for giving out the cheese. Some claim the distribution of the free cheese in the past nineteen months has cut commercial sales of cheese, but the government is still buying cheese from the makers and huge stock piles havent gone down any. The fraud involved in the cheese give away is just another example of political indifference through lade of a plan, or should I say, a united plan for distribution and lack of real supervision.
