Scouts Return From Maple Dell Three local Scout Troops joined forces to share a campsite at Camp Maple Dell, a Boy Scout Camp about five miles up Payson Canyon. They shared the camp with about 450 Scouts from Utah and Salt Lake Counties and had many opportunities to make new friends. Troop 658, Dave Blake SM ; Troop 636 of the American LegiOn, Jerry Hansen SM; and Troop 649, under direction of Jaymes Helmstettler and Jeff Kouns all shared the Cherokee campsite for five days and nights bf scouting activities. The Scouts cooked, over open fires all week and except for those who slept in, seemed to eat fairly well. At least no one Suffered from stomach ache or the other dreaded malady of campers and foreign travelers. Some of the Scouts cooked up three delicious dutch oven cobblers. All three troops took the opportunity to load up their back packs and hike 2 miles further up the cannon, and II domean up, toMaple Lake andWiftTp" overnight after hours offifihthg-Th- e only boy U catch any fish wa$ 7 year old Gerritt Hansen. Unfortunately the skunks ate them while we all slept. On Thursday evening when Dave Blake led his troop up the mountain one of the staff members remained at the lake long enough to tell the Scouts about the monster that inhabited the lake and how it had been seen dragging unsuspecting boys into the lake to devour them. Gerald Mc Donald and Lyn Christensen were so impressed that they slept (questionable) with their clothes and boots on sp they could get out quick. Dave walked into camp the next morning looking like he had just stepped out of a shower: some easy hike. All that packing and hiking just to hang a little black bead on their camp patch. During the week all the Scouts had the opportunity to work on merit badge classes including canoeing, which nearly everyone earned, to Environmental Science, which almost no one finished. This scoutmaster joined his son in the Mammals Merit Badge class and made plaster casts of racoon and deer tracks, learned about some of the eating habits of the red squirrel and to classify several mammals from Phylum to their genus species name. Try Felis concolor on for size. Maple Dell is an excellent camp to attend to work on the various nature related subjects. The Scouts had access to excellent facilities including ia rifle range, swimming pool, lake fron activities of rowing, canoeing, and of course, fishing. There was an equally good shower area that didnt see much action. Also available was a crafts area with an excellent stock of materials for Indian leatherwork, woodcarving, lore and basket weaving plus much more. Most of the Scouts earned one merit badge while some earned as many as five. . All three troops participated in the morning flag ceremonies, where they all received feathers for their accomplishments, and the evening campfire programs. All in all, it was a great week of Scouting fun and eveiyone will be ready to go again next year. At the Wednesday evening Order of the Arrow campfire, Cody Merchant, Warren Hansen, Travis Honeycutt, Rusty Bastian and Robert Taylor were called out to be candidates for membership in the Honor Camper Society that pledges itself to promote Scouting, service, brotherhood, and camping throughout their lives.
