Show Thursday, June 30, . CHRISTENSENS Dear Vi: Please send me directions for the pots for house plants and any other ideas for broken woodsy-lookin- g ANNUAL STOREWIDE SUMMER SALE BEGINS WEDNESDAY, JUNE Someone asked me today how to freeze cherries, so I thought I should tell all of you who may also want to know. You simply wash them and put them in a plastic beg, then eat them while theyre still icy. Oh, so declicious on a hot summer day. Of course, it you want them for pie, pit them first, add desired amount of sugar, stir until the juice comes out, then pack in your containers. While discussing freezing foods, I want to mention again that much freezer space is saved when you freeze food in blocks. I use my bread pans, putting the filled bags in them in such a manner that they lie flat. After you remove the frozen blocks from the pans, its a good idea to wrap them so that the bags dont get punctured. I use brown bags or shelf paper for this. By the way, quoting my friend, Dora Flack, cherries make better raisins than raisins, so if you have your own tree, you might pit some of your excess and dry them. Buying cherries to make raisins is probably too expensive for most of us, but they are delicious dried. crayons. If anyone has ideas for old jewelry, I would appreciate it. I really enjoy your column and have gained many good ideas from it and have also been reminded of some I used to use. I pass many of the ideas on to members of my family who 29 CHRISTENSEN'S ANNUAL STOREWIDE SUMMER SALE IS NOW IN PROGRESS Departments for Tremendous Summer Savings . Savings of of Mrs. Melba Lyman Readers, the directions for the pots can be had by sending 25c plus a envelope to stamped, me at the address below. I hope some of you will pass on your ideas about old jewelry for Melba. I have seen clear framed Christmas trees done on velvet with old jewelry and pretty buttons but have never made one myself. I believe the beads may be glued on with tacky glue or perhaps sewn on. My grandchildren like to string beads, so I keep broken strands for them. Dear Vi: Our need for new lamp shades but reluctance to pay the price for any we saw and liked, triggered an idea that makes me feel proud of myself. Since we liked the shape of the old frames, which were still good and strong, I wrapped them with strips of nylon net cut eight inches wide, letting each strip overlap the last one a bit. I used transparent thread to secure the last strip securely in place, so that you cant see where the winding starts and ends. The shades are beautiful, Vi. The light bulb shows just a little when turned on, but this gives a hazy appearance that is quite attractive. Our shades took about 18 yards of net, but it is so inexpensive that both shades cost less than $5.00 a sizeable saving, and weve never had shades we liked better. Mrs. Gene Delaney, Idaho Falls If so, Marriott Library at the University of Utah would like to hear from you. The library has recently launched the Utah Newspaper Project, a three-stageffort to identy every newspaper ever published in the state and find and microfilm all existing copies. The project is part of the national program launched by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Similar efforts are planned in each of the 50 states, says Dr. Robert P: director and Holley, project assistant Marriott Librarys director for technical services. While obscure old newspapers usually dont have much monetary value, they are prime sources for anybody doing historical or cultural history research, says Holley. In the 1950s, the library undertook a huge project to microfilm all copies of better known Utah daily and weekly newspapers. The library has kept up those microfilm files ever since. The new project is aimed at discovering what we missed primarily papers that folded, says Holley. In some cases the small mining or industry towns where may papers were published themselves have pased from the scene.
