All eight candidates The Guard is Ready It might sound trite, but is still true: We can all sleep safely this week because the National Guard is prepared. And theyre even more prepared because of the two weeks of intensive training the men just completed. We at the The Salina Sun are proud of the men who take time out of busy family and vocational schedules to gain needed ex- perience, skills and knowledge. National Guardsmen are called out not only in times of national defense emergencies, but also in times of local need, such as floods, plane crashes and other disasters, natural and manmade. At the two week summer camp, guardsmen are trained and tested in combat readiness. Local guard units are tested on their ability to function in combat, deliver timely and accurate artillery fires to targets more than ten miles away and on their ability to survive in the modern combat environment. Reports reveal that our guardsmen achieved highest ratings in these areas. Our hope is that we never will be forced to test the readiness of our national guardsmen in actual battles. It is also our belief that realistic combat readiness of our faithful national guardsmen is more of a deterrent to potential enemies than a sit back and pray attitude that historically has caused more conflicts than it averted. are servative Republicans.
