Show Important Ammonia Safety Tips Utah Farmer Honored For Test Plot Flint, Utah field representative for Ger- Steve mains a in Seeds, presented plaque to Marvin Magleby honor of his proficiency conducting a corn test plot his farm near Elsinore Sevier County. in at in Cow Comfort In addition to its high Pays Dairymen Utah dairymen have long interested in the comfort of their cows. They been reason that comfortable cows will be more contented, produce more and better quality milk, have less disease problems, and be gentler to handle than cows stressed by their environment. More than 10 years ago, Utah State University extension specialists adapted the motel idea and developed individual bedded stalls, called free stalls, in a covered shed. Each cow could walk into a stall and lie down. Since then, free stalls have become common dairies throughout Utah and in many states over the country. Whether the stalls are in open sheds or in enclosed barns, they pay. Dr. Don W. Thomas, extension dairy health specialist, USU, said, Providing good individual tree stalls, properly maintained, can really pay off as they have done this winter. Cows using them from were protected frostbite on their teats. who didnt Dairymen provide such protection have paid for it in sore teats and are still paying for it in mastitis resulting from the frostbite. Other measures con- tributing to cow comfort such as regularly cleaned corrals, adequate manger space where all animals can eat, and a supply of clean fresh water really help. Also, Dr. Thomas has been helping dairymen in counties over the state to use milking practices and equipment that make it a pleasant experience for the cow to come into the barn and be milked. He has helped dairymen find the cause and reduce stress resulting from improper operation of the milking machines and from stray electricity. Though more can still be done to improve en- vironment, milking machines, and milking procedures, Dr. Thomas says measures to provide cows with comfort are helping to keep down the cost of production and maintain milk of superior quality. Somatic cell count, a measure of udder health and milk quality, has been reduced to less than a third of what it was. Farmers who work with liquid fertilizers, particularly anhydrous ammonia or aqua ammonia, could be in for serious eye injury and possible blindness. unless they wear proper eye protection. That warning comes from Dave Williams, extension safety specialist at Iowa State University. Because of the high water tissolubility of ammonia, eye sue with its high fluid content is especially vulnerable to injury, and many persons are blinded or suffer severe eye injuries from ammonia. The specialist cites the following safety tips from the Iowa Society to Prevent Blindness: Wear safety goggles with hooded vents and a rim that Fits close to the face and around the eyes at all times when working with or around ammonia substances. Also wear approved rubber gloves. tank filled Keep a with fresh, clean water attached to the nurse tank and the applicator so a supply of water is readily available. Always check all hose fittings and connections daily to tinually with water for at least be sure they are tight and there are no leaks. Most accidents with ammonia occur when the material is transferred from one tank to another. Carry a small plastic squeeze bottle of water in your pocket when working with ammonia. This can be used to im- 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses first, if victim wears them. Do not apply salves or mediately flush your eyes so you can find your larger water supply. The first 10 seconds are crucial. Stand upwind during transfer operations. If an accident occurs, flush the eyes immediately and con ointments because they tend to seal in the liquid and may add to the damage. If bums are extensive and a water tank or pond is available, immerse the victim immediately. When the victim is taken to a physician after exposed areas have been flushed with water, advise the doctor that ammonia caused the injury. The purpose of this corn plot, Magleby explained, was to evaluate and select the top performing varieties related to local growing conditions. Our test plot included both new and varieties established varieties which serve as a comparison check. test The agronomic traits of the individual entries are evaluated by a rating system ranging from 1 for perfect to 9 for poor. To performance average a score of from 2 to 3; a scoring of 8 or 9 would be considered a total failure. The silage varieties in. our test plots, Magleby explained, were evaluated for yield, leafiness, grain content, ear height and stalk quality. Leafiness is especially significant in a silage he believes, variety, because it contributes to both palatability and yield. We evaluted this trait for total leafiness, leaf width and color.
