He also ran a once a residence owned by cleaning mill for seed . P.H. This grain. At one time he had Madsen. . . . - residence was purchased by Will Rasmussen and remodeled into a service station and garage. Across the street to the west, the Texaco Service Station, was once two residences. One owned by Charles Hansen, the other August Erickson. Charles Hansen purchased cream and milk for the Nelson-Rick- s Creamery of Salt Lake City. He shipped cream to Salt Lake on the Vf - '0 Co. - . . , railroad. The Blair Curtis car and TV agency was once the residence of Oluf Jeppson. He sold slcaked lime and also had the first motel in Salina, a number of little frame buildings. When people from out of town had a person in the hospital, they could stay at this place, which was just across the street from the hospital. The railroad depot was a busy place in the early days. All transportation of goods was either shipped by freight or express hauled by the railroad. Many train loads of cattle and sheep were transported on the railroad. When shipping livestock on the railroad, someone lhad to go along to watch the livestock so none would get down and be killed by the ones standing. So we boys would take the job of taking care of the livestock. We got our fare down on the freight and our fare back on the passenger train. We stopped in Las Vegas overnight to feed and water the animals. Las Vegas had one hotel and one restaurant. At that time, one could have bought the whole Las v ' ' I ; ' ? L ; ' Vegas strip for $1,000. The railroad at Salina was a shipping point for wool. Wool was hauled from Wayne County and other parts of southern Utah. The wool was piled on the railroad grounds. everybody had their on the railroad grounds, the wobl buyers would come and bid on the wool. After the wool was sold, it was loaded on railroad cars and shipped. There is one story told about the wool piled on the railroad yard. The wool was hauled to the railroad yard in wagons. When hauling wool, the hauler camped out at the railroad yard. One fellow with a wagon load of wool had a big grub box full of all kin-- . ds of eats. He watched an old fellow who had a flour sack with a few hard biscuits and some salt side. So the fellow with the big grub box gave the old fellow some groceries. He was telling some other wool haulers that he felt sorry for the old fellow, as he didnt have very much to eat, so he gave him some groceries. The other wool haulers told him, You see that long pile of wool? The longest in the yard belongs to the old fellow to whom you gave the groceries. At one time Salina was the largest local shipping point for livestock in the United States. Livestock was trailed in to Salina, and from there shipped on the railroad. There were strings of cattle two and three miles long trailing into the railroad yard for shipment. The railroad was also the delivery point for gas and oil to the various ser- vice station in the territory. The site of the Day and Z'Z's Night Cafe was once a storage shed for a thrashing machine. The thrashing machine, pain-ted i 1 X'C red, everybody called the red onions machine. The Premium Oil Co. Service Station was once a flour mill. The mill quit making flour and became a feed mill. This mill was made of brick and one night it caught fire and liiunnl the r'vtf and all the pai (; A nm roof : pul in (lie building, and Ibis bmldiiuj was n;.erl as a slni age plai e nr be nil company. On the railroad yard was located the Sevier Valley Merc. The Sevier Valley Merc was owned by A.J. Crosier. He bought w'.-e- r in his possession about all the alfalfa seed in the State of Utah. The way this came about was that he built a little cleaning machine he could carry with him. He would get a sample of seed as it came from the thrashing machine. Then he weighed the sample and ran it through his little cleaning machine. So he knew exactly how much clean seed was in the sample. So he knew what price to pay for the seed. So he was paying more for the unclean seed than others. As again when he sold the clean seed he could set his price, as he had the bulk of the seed in Utah. The years bring many changes. Now many changes are taking place today with the opening of coal mines and the new highway. This has been an exciting time, when one thinks about it. From the horse and buggy to a man on the moon. Now one can go from Salina to Los Angeles in less time than it took to go to Richfield by horse and buggy. The upstairs of the rock building has been a moving picture theatre.
