Lost productivity is driving up costs for all of us. Why is it that so many people didnt learn to read? Interviews with reveal that most didnt learn to read because they were not prepared to learn to read. Gov. Mike Leavitt agrees: The cost to society of children who do not achieve the capacity to read is simply higher than we can afford. Parents must prepare children to learn by reading to them every day." The governor also noted that children often fall behind in school during holiday and summer vacation breaks. Whether your holiday season is focused around Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan, Kwanza, or simply lighting a candle to acknowledge the rhythm of the seasons, you can give the gift of reading. If you know someone who cannot read or would like to read better, please call your local library and ask about literacy programs. If you have children in your life, give them a library card, help them learn to select books and read with them often. Best of all, resolve to do something nice for yourself. But the 40 people who did re- ply appear to be pretty happy with the city, Mayor Ben Jones 'said. According to survey tabula-- . tions made by Jones, 81 percent ...of the responders said the city ,was responsive to the needs of the community. And 79 percent said city ser- vices, including police and fire, '.were adequate. Top concerns expressed by the survey responders involved traffic, open space, commercial growth, public safety, and parks and recreation issues. Thirty-si- x percent of the responders said the city should focus more attention on traffic problems, while 31 percent felt the top issue facing die city was open space. In addition to the general resident survey, the city also asked its employees to respond. Jones said comments here were also favorable and at the same time provided officials with valuable suggestions. He said the city council and city administration will be using data from both surveys to make improvements in how Riverdale is managed. He said not all changes may please everyone, but that the city is committed to being customer oriented and in basing decisions on what is best for the community as a whole. Major changes in the citys organization were approved by the city council just this past week. The changes included combining the citys administratorcoun-se- l positions; elimination of the citys fire chief and police chief positions and the creation of a Public Safety Department with a department head who will oversee both police and fire; and the creation of a new Department of Business Administration.
