Show 7 UTAH POWER ARD LIGHT T the 1 e past year 1016 has been one past of the t most ra t important in the history of the utah power light company this year lias has witnessed extensive progress on several of the companas comp anys most important projects looking to the utilization of the natural resources in the territory it serves the company has extended extence d its service to a number of new communities and large sums of money have been expended in reconstruction work in cities towns and rural districts where service had been previously established by the company the utah and idaho towns which alch during 1916 have been added to the communities previously served by the coni company pany are as follows benjamin Co coalville alville Ilone tendon mendon newton clarkston west jordan gear bear river city bancroft lava hot springs and lund the company has also purchased and is operating tile the distribution systems in farmington and wellsville during the company was also able to give temporary relief to several municipal plants who had trouble in keeping a continuous service new s treet street lighting systems have been ins installed talleo in salt lake city parker montpelier richmond smithfield wellsville and clarkston the new construction work carried on by the company during the past year includes a number of extensive and important projects of these th ese the development work carried on around bear lake and along bear river in idaho has the most direct and important influence upon the prosperity and comfort of the people in utah and idaho territory served by the company the development work on dear bear lake and bear river was started several years ago and la Is not yet completed the extensive operations of 1916 include the work of dredging on the outlet canal connecting dear bear lake with bear river to a decree where only maintenance work will be ne cessa ay iy in 1 tie the I 1 fu future tu re two canals carry the flood dood and excess waters of bear river into j bear lake each year where these waste waters are stored until required to keep the flow of the river up to normal for the benefit of irrigated lands dependent on the river for their water wid for the operation of the companas comp anys power houses on the river tho the outlet canal from the lake to tile the river is the means by the stored ti up water is carried back into bear river to augment the work of this outlet canal the utah power light company has this year constructed on the edge of bear lake a large pumping as this pumping station Is a notable piece of work as it Is built on the edge of the lake where no solid foundation exists there was nothing but quick sand and clay for miles around and the foundation for the heavy machinery of the station and the enormous suction and discharge tubes had to be carried down in this soft material to a depth of about forty five feet the caisson which was use used d for sinking these foundations dat ions was the largest open caisson used for lowering bridge foundations and similar underwater under tinder water works the lifton pumping station has five elec tr tri cally feally operated pumps each driven by a h p induction motor and I 1 each capable of pumping second feet of water power for these pumps is supplied by a transmission line from the grace power station of bear river the power lower is transmitted at volts and stepped down to 2300 1 volts for use in the motors I 1 it was the dredging of tile the canals connecting dear bear river and dear bear lake by the utah power light company in 1915 that enabled sufficient water to be drawn from hear bear lake during that tha t year to save the crops in cache and gentile valleys and the construction of the lifton pumping station therefore constitutes an extra safeguard in the years to come in the assurance that a sufficient willy supply of water may always be sent down bear river for tile the irrigators in the territory contiguous thereto |
