Show For urn LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Citizens, beware of Proposition 2 Please be aware that Proposition 2 (H.J.R. 8 enrolled 1997) will be on the election ballot Nov. 3, 1998. Now known as Resolution Repealing Marital Property Provisions, Proposition 2 has one purpose. That is to repeal Article XXII s.2 from the Utah Constitution (an original provision, Utah Constitution, 1896D). Article XXII s.2 Property Rights of married women (Real and Personal estate of every female, acquired before marriage, and all property to which she may afterwards become entitled by purchase, gift, grant, inheritance or devise, shall be and remain the estate and property of such female, and shall not be liable for the debts, obligations or engagements of her husband, and may be conveyed, devised or bequeathed by her as if she were unmarried.) By the use of the words to read the author of Proposition 2 suggests that the text of this article has been changed. It has not. It has remained in our constitution, unchanged, for over a hundred years to protect and preserve the property rights of the men and women of Utah. Proposition 2 has one sole purpose. That is to take our protection under this law away from the citizens of Utah. For every right there is a responsibility. That responsibility rests with us. We have the power. Government cannot be for the people unless it is for all the people. We are the people. Help to preserve these rights, not only for the women and men of Utah, but for our children and grandchildren.
