September 546-129- States Proposed Economic Development Merger Opposed Business Home-Base- d A recent proposal to merge the States Economic Development Office and the Economic Development Corporation of Utah has the Chamber officially protested the merger to the Governor. While the merger may make sense for the Salt Lake metro area, it will decrease the marketing efficiency in the North Davis area by using committed tax dollars that are currently directed here. Additionally, moving funds and control away from local leadership decreases their opportunity for input and desensitizes the marketers to the reality within the communities which comprise North Davis. The Chamber wishes to increase economic product development within North Davis county so that businesses can be developed to support our population. Currently, many of our citizens work in the Salt Lake metro area, supplying that economically successful area with employees. This situation has obviously increased traffic problems, costs to the states, etc. One chamber representative compared the merger with putting all of your eggs in one basket, The Salt Lake metro area. Chamber businesses already pay taxes to the state for economic development purposes. The chamber supports the Economic Development Corporation of Utah with a membership and feels that organization is beneficial to marketing. I lowever, the idea of Chamber members paying dues to the EDCU in order to be legible for marketing help, is essentially double taxation. The concept of having one office to answer phones and offer a single focus for recruitment and business development is certainly a great idea. I lowever, the chamber cannot support that which would not be beneficial to North Davis Communities. Economic development needs to be decentralized within the state, thereby placing some eggs in other baskets. The Chamber welcomes opposing points of view.
