Show Lakeside Review TXVLAKESIDE Thursday, August 13, 1998 S SPEAKING GUT Forget banks, stick with your piggy By SUNSHINE NAKAE services. Then they have the nerve to ask us if we would like to pay nine bucks to get a statement explaining what the crud we got charged for. I swear, they just invent fees and lump them into an ominous service fee category. Its so much bull. I bounced a check and I didnt even know it because I had service fees. The worst thing is, it cost me 46 bucks for a $3 check at Taco Maker! Is that fair? I had to wait for my next measly paycheck to bail my account out of the red. I considered just leaving it to rot in the financial dumps, but in the end I gave in and forked over the blasted money. It was only after I tried everything. Those 800 numbers are the biggest joke of all. There are huge lists that this annoying jX correspondent If you are a banks around here wont do you much good. They dont want business from teens. We work jobs so they could care less where we put our measly paychecks. Most of their services totally dont apply to teens. Its not like teens need a mortgage or a home equity loan. They dont approve loans for teens anyway; they dont let us for our have credit back-u- p checking accounts. Then we get charged stupid fees for stupid AN voice reads so slowly that by the time you find the one you want, you forgot the number. If you get on hold, youll have your next two birthdays before some operator picks up, thanks you for waiting, and then puts you back on hold. Why dont they just call it ignore? Sheesh. The music playing in the background bugs me. Its like theyre trying to calm your nerves and keep you from ripping their heads off once they finally answer your call. If you have to work, like most people do so they can afford the service fees, then you arent able to get money out anyway because the banks arent open after six. This is so stupid. They do this so they can charge you money every time you use the convenient ATM. The bottom line is, I think I was better off with my money in a glass jar or a tin can. At least I could get it out without a service fee. At least there were no stupid automated systems to confuse me and make my life a waiting fest. At least I was the one in control. The next time you think of saving money through banking, consider your standard piggy bank instead of the ones around here. Its cuter, it has no 800 number with an annoying voice, there is no elevator music or tiny print, there is no service fee, and best of all, if you arent happy with its services, you can take a hammer to it. In my experiences, practically every little ldd answered the same, that he or she wanted to be a bird so he or she could fly. The wonder and magic of flight continues to fascinate all ages, not just the very young. For the past few years, Ive watched my older sister Mackenzie as she has worked to bring her wish to fly to reality. As kids we both loved to fly with our dad in his plane, but Mackenzie took an extra special interest in the hobby. She absolutely loved to fly. So, naturally, when Mackenzie entered high school, she also enrolled in ground school at the Ogden airport. There she spent weeks of studying and concentration to learn the essential skills of flying. Because of a busy high school schedule, Mackenzie had to wait to participate in the training in the air. Just recently, she successfully fulfilled her dream and obtained her license. Mackenzie took up flying because of the pure freedom and excitement that comes from flying. Just imagine the rush of being thousands of feet above the earth with nothing at all around The sport of flying does offer a lot of perks, though. No more you. When you are in the air there are no stop lights or traffic, long, tedious road trips in the family car. CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING High EfficiencyEnergy All After checking fancy finds reviewer doodads, Sharp recorder superior By MIKE BERMAN Journal o Commerce Go ahead - say it! Mike, I Youre just asking for trouble if you start playing told you so! with those fancy electronic doodads! Well, apparently I opened Pandoras Box when I reviewed Walkman a few Sonys mini-dis- k weeks ago. The ink was hardly dry on that column when I received a call from the folks at Sharp Electronics claiming that their mini-dis- k recorder was smaller and had more features than the Sony RZ-3- 0. So, I've been testing the Sharp Portable Mini-Dis- k Recorder ($399.95) for the past couple of weeks and it does offer some distinct advantages. It's made so it can fit in your MD-MS7- shirt pocket, about a third smaller than the Sony. But heres where the guys with the Sharp minds slipped a bit. Using it can be tricky. This babys a front-loade- r, which means you dont need to open it up to insert a disk. But, the location of the earphone jack makes it impossible to put it in your shirt pocket with the slot for the disk facing up, which was the original intention. You have to take it out of your pocket to remove and insert disks. All of the buttons to control recording and playback functions are conveniently located on top of the unit, which is a big advantage over the competition. But to save space, theyve eliminated the record button. It took a while before we figured out that the red record light actually serves a dual purpose, sitting on top of the record switch. Its 24-b- it ATRAC sound system allowed us to crank up the volume a bit higher than the Sony. Although this may not be necessary for the average user, it was a welcome feature for those of us that ply the subways to and from lower Manhattan. Also we were able to enhance the bass a bit more using the units triple bass or X Bass - technology. The unit also features a backlit remote control with an LCD display duplicating the display panel on the face of the player. This unit attaches to the earphones and allows you to control all of the units functions without taking it out of your pocket The function keys on the remote were also big enough to make them easy to find. All of the other features were identical to the Sony, including one-ste- p synchronized recording, shock resistant playback with a small buffer memory built in so you wont miss a note, inputs for a microphone and optical or analog cable, and a rechargeable lithium battery. Expect to get about three or - four hours of playback-recordin- g time from each charge, which is a bit less than we got from the Sony. Also the Sony had an attachable module that holds two AA batteries that extended record-playbac- k time to a maximum of about 12 hours. Sharps MD-X- 8 Minisystem I also was able to get a look at Sharps MD-X- 8 Minisystem ($799.95). Although I didnt get a chance to play with one, what I saw signals the entrance of audio systems into the computer age. The MD-X- 8 is actually a mini stereo system boasting three compact disk players and a minir. disk Simply put, this assures you of a better quality recording than youd get if you hooked a minidisk player into a stereo system using cables. But thats not what caught my eye. This baby can be connected to your notebook computer via a PCMCIA card ($299.95) and will allow you to record .wav" files on a mini-disThese files are actual sound recordings that have been digitized to be played back on computers with sound cards and speakers. But this technology will let you reproduce them on a stereo system. For those of you that are familiar with Liquid Audio, which player-recorde- k. Girls urged to have chlamydia test Sacramento Bee SACRAMENTO, Calif. -Sexually active girls should be tested twice a year for chlamydia, an insidious infection that often has no symptoms but can cause serious gynecological problems including infertility, health experts are recommending. In a study published in this weeks Journal of the American Medical Association, one in three adolescent girls tested positive for the bacterial infection, researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore said. Public health officials said chlamydia is epidemic in Sacramento County, though numbers gathered in California cannot be directly compared with those reported by the Baltimore researchers. Its a very serious issue here," said Dr. Glcnnah Trochct, sexually transmitted disease controller for the Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services. But she and others questioned whether funding could be found to do the additional testing suggested by the Johns Hopkins scientists. The Baltimore researchers found chlamydia in 24 percent of 3,202 sexually active girls ages 12 to 19 years old who visited their clinics for the first time. Nearly 30 percent of the girls, tested at family planning, sexually transmitted disease clinics and school clinics in the Baltimore area, had at least one positive test Fourtccn-year-ol- d girls had the highest proportion of positive tests, at 27 percent, researchers said. The pediatrician who led the study. Gale Burstcm, said she knew chlamydia was an impor tant public health problem. But even I was surprised that the numbers were this high, she said. Chlamydia is one of the most common causes of pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility in women in the United States. The infection, spread through unprotected sex, can occur in males but young females are most vulnerable and at greatest nsk for permanent problems. Left untreated, chlamydia can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes that can result in infertility or a potentially fatal tubal pregnancy. Symptoms in women can include lower abdominal pain, irregular bleeding and a burning sensation during urination. Burstcm and her colleagues are recommending that girls be tested for chlamydia every six months. k via the sells music PC, this means you can go to the Liquid Audio web site and download your favorite tracks directly to the minidisk system.
