Show rT A real Layton man crafts one-of-a-ki- Volunteer connection pen pal They are totally unique Bret Wyont said of his writing nd instruments pens. Because of the varied colors in the By RUTH MALAN Standard-Examine- r correspondent - What started for Bret turned into a job. Wyont has gone from woodworking to penmaking, creating custom pens one at a time so no two are the same. d acrylUsing fine ics and polymers, the pens are sawed, drilled, shaped and polished right in Wyonts own garage workshop. The scars on Wyonts hands are witnesses to the work they have done throughout the years. It all began when Wyont was young. Nearly everyone in his family worked with wood, and Wyont made a solid oak baby cradle that rocked side to side as his first piece of furniture. From there his hobby grew until people were giving him pictures of items they wanted made and he constructed them. He works with solid woods such as oak, cherry and walnut, making all types of customized furniture. I le has been turning wood for 20 years. Then, about three years ago when he was in San Antonio, Texas, he watched a man make a wooden pen. He decided he could make pens, too. Wyont began by turning pens of various woods, but he soon noticed that when the pen was used, the finish on the wood deteriorated. Natural skin oils and lotions applied to the skin caused the wood to discolor. Since he was guaranteeing his pens, he knew he had to do something about the problem. He has made pens of walrus teeth and of deer horns, which almost look like ivory, but he needed a materia he could get a good supply of, so he began searching for a new material to work with. About a year ago he found a place in Ohio to purchase the acry lics which are now used to create the pens. And his company, Figura Fine Pens, was material used, none of the LAYTON pens are the same. They can he custom-mad- e for the hand, too. Mens pens are usually larger than the hand-poure- ones madefor women. n. bom. There are 20 colors to choose from and he has made nearly 1,000 different pens. Many of the pens are given away. Lvcryonc he works with has one of his pens. He w as flying on an airplane when he came up with the design for the new pen. They are nowhere near straight, Wyont said of his curved pens. Because of the varied colors in the material used, none of the pens are the same. They can be custom-mad- e for the hand, too. Mens pens are usually larger than the ones made for w'omcn. They are totally unique and moderately priced, Wyont said. I le starts the process of creating the pen by cutting the material into two lengths. These are then drilled lengthwise to open them for the inside of the pen. Wyont has made a special wood clamp to hold the small pieces this year from the Utah Jazz to make pens with the Jazz logo on the clip. (They are available at the Jazz store at the Delta Center). And he has filled an order for corporate pens for Iomega Corporation with its corporate logo on the clip. Country music billows from the shop as Wyont works on the pens. He has taught the craft to But his son and to his step-sohe tells them if they work with him, they have to sing along with the music. It takes him 30 to 45 minutes to make a pen, depending on the pen he is working on. "You never know what grain or how the color will turn out, he said. He has no pattern to follow. He just puts the acrylic or wood onto a lathe and makes the design by hand. Turning off the lathe, his experienced fingers rub the pen to feel for imperfections in the material. Overhead halogen lights help him to see. The lights help me see how it looks and to get rid of the imperfections, he explained. Very fine shavings are scattered as the work goes on. He automatically knows which tool to pick up next. The raw material transforms right before your eyes. When he is satisfied with the turning of the pen, he begins a very extensive polishing process. It is a process he keeps to himself so his competition wont find out. I would love to make one for Karl Malone, he said. He made the first dozen Jazz pens and promised he wouldnt duplicate any of them without permission. If I had a dream it would be to make 2002 of them for the Olympics. They would be numbered with certificates of authenticity. It would take 10 months to make them, he said. The pen he is making isnt quite right, so it goes back onto the lathe to be refined. Im my worst critic, he admits as he feels a tight spot in the pen. The pens are equipped with a pressurized ball point refill made by Fisher Space Pen Company in Boulder City, Nev. This is the same type of refill that was invented by Paul Fisher for NASA. It is used by both the American astronauts and the Russian astro-- AT WORK ON HIS CRAFT: Bret Wyont of Layton works on one of hisone-of--a kind pens on the lathe in his garage.
