Show 6 Tuesday Lakeside May 26 1998 Syracuse Junior High Lakeside Review Viewmont cheerleaders repeat Squad takes top honors again at Florida competition By DICK WALTER Standard Examiner correspondent BOUNTIFUL - March in Utah can sometimes be rather blustery, so a Spring vacation in sunny Florida could be just the thing to brighten up your spirit The Cheerleader squad from Viewmont High School went to Jacksonville, Fla last weekend, and while the trip may have brightened up their spirits, it was anything but a vacation It was a very intense three-da- y competition with cheerleaders from all over the country, said Jennifer Romney, a junior. We had to compete in individual tumbling and dance and as a cheerleading squad. We were in the Jacksonville Convention Center, and I dont think we saw any of the sunny Florida sky, except for the day we got there and the day we left. of America Cheerleaders GRADE: Syracuse Junior High 7th grade officers are Nick Galbraith, 1st vice president, Darcee Kawaguchi, 2nd vice president, and Jared Wilcox, president. SEVENTH sponsored the event and Romney competed with hundreds of girls from across the nation. By Saturday night she had finished the semi finals m the top 10, which netted her a $500 scholarship and a chance to compete in the finals. At the end of the finals, she finished number one in individuals, and the Viewmont squad finished first in tumbling and dance, and first in the cheerleading rou- - r jr "K -- ' - v- r f V Jennifer Romney Junior takes top individual honors. 4 tine It was the second consecutive year that Viewmont has finished at the top m both categories. Viewmont is the only school to have done that," said Romney. Other schools have won single competitions two or three years m a row, but this was a first m the history of the competition that a school had won both. The girls will share a $1,000 scholarship for the team competition. Many people still have the ditzey blonde concept of cheerleaders, said Robin Romney, Jennifers mom, but it is much different than that today. The girls have to be smart, coordinated and have great athletic abilities. Jennifer says it takes a lot of her time, but she went into cheerleading because it was something that she had wanted to do since she was a little girl. She began taking gymnastics in elementary school and became a cheerleader when she was m the 9th grade. When she made the sophomore team at View- - mont, she was pulled up into the varsity team and went to the nationals I love to perform, she said, and although it takes a loi of time and teamwork, it hay . been worth every minute Jennifer's mother said them js a very good support group a' Viewmont for the girls. T was very impressed at hov much support the girls get from the teachers and administration as well as from the parents," she said. The girls have to pay all o their own costs when they go Uu the competitions. The schopFf cannot contribute any montn from district funds and Cheerleaders of America is a non-prorganization that provides scho' arships but no travel expense it takes a great deal of dedica tion and teamwork on the gif Romne part to participate, said. The girls are involved with th: cheerleading squad nearly si year. They begin practice in early summer and do fund raisers Foi their expenses throughout the year. The girls have to be in tor physical condition, and maintan a high grade point average to .be ; ; on the team. ' We get so much suppor from the school," Jennifer said Our coach, Toni Bowman, is the best and I really appreciate her assistants, Pat Wood and Travi Hampshire. They give up a lot o their time to help the team. . ; " Two complete DATC industrial apprenticeships - KAYSVILLE Norman ed Manning and Langford the Department of Labor apprenticeship certificates on behalf of Ron Matteucci and Juan Palaez , from the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training.
