Show Lakeside Review LAKESIDERECREATION Navigation rules prevent collisions Traveling on the highway or in the city is as there are stop signs, traffic signals, crosswalks, driving lanes and other driving aids But what about on the water? Tfjere are few signs in our stateVaters and we depend on knowledge of boating, or navigation Jules. Since so few skippers know them is it any wonder that there are so many accidents? The whole purpose of the navigation rules is to prevent collisions on the water. All boats are required to follow the rules, whether its a 1 skiff or an ocean liner. How do we do that if we dn't know who has the right of Way and what to expect of the othe guy? There are three situations in which an accident may occur between boats: passing, crossing and "meeting, So what do we do? Each boat is either a stand on vessel, one which maintains course and speed, or a give way vessel, the one which gets out of the way. In the first situation, when meeting another vessel head-oeach boat should turn to the righf. Neither has the right of way and both are give way vessels.. The turn should begin long before it is too late and be wide enough so each skipper knows what is happening. In crossing, the vessel on the right has the right of way, or is the stand on vessel. The give way vessel must slow down, go behind the stand on vessel, stop, or, if necessary, go in reverse. When passing another boat you must stay out of the way of the one being passed, and the vessel being passed must maintain course and speed. Remember, when near another vessel you must stay at least 150 fet away unless wakeless. You know youre too close if you can read the bow numbers - that's the law. ITfie reason the stand on vessel must follow the rule is so the oth- i t Tuesday iTmm STORAGE SHEDS 10x12 CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONING It?. The only time you may depart from the rules is if it is obvious that the other person is not going to obey the rules. In other words, dont keep going just because you have the right of way. sim- By the way, something else to remember - you might want to give way to a larger boat that is less maneuverable. For example, a personal watercraft wouldnt want to tangle with a cruiser or an outboard with a freighter. In any event, whatever evasive action is taken should be done well in advance and be conspicuous. If you have a PWC and would like your child to operate it, a course is available through the state. You can register your youngster by calling 1 (800) Ride PWC or 1 (800) That will connect you with the Utah Parks and Recreation Division, which will schedule a class. A parent must attend with the child. 743-379- 2. 8?' . ftllABu t In Business Since 1985 THE WOOD SHOP Offer Expiree At the End of the Month 520 South State, Clearfield 520 South State, Clearfield CO 36 40-fo- Speaking of personal watercraft, there are three new regulations that took effect this year. One, you must have proof of insurance on your PWC as well as the registration certificate. Secondly, you may not nde a PWC at night even if it has navigation lights, and finally, an owner can be cited on behalf of a minor if the minor operator is violating a regulation, riding recklessly, does not have a valid license (must have one if between ages 12 and 17, inclusive) is in any way operating outside the law.
