Some are good, many are bad. Out of all these catchy sayings and gimmicks, one stands alone as the ultimate pick-u- p line. Open your ears, teens. The secret to winning over members of the opposite sex is in three easy words . . , ' Want a PEZ? . Spoken alone this phrase means nothing, but add a cute little cartoon head and mini pieces of PEZ candy and youve got the move of the century. PEZ come in various flavors, are packed with sugar, and are perfect for popping into the mouth. Z PEZ candies have been around for almost 50 years; around when my parents were kids. Why are they still around today? The simple truth is that people like PEZ. There are more than 60,000 web pages linked to PEZ and a yearly convention is held for people all over the world. PEZ candies are not just for kids but are great for teenagers. In fact, the n in Los Angeles first annual ended April 4, so PEZ are obviously becoming even more popular. What better way is there to approach a prospective catch than to walk right up, unashamed, with confidence, and ofier him or her a tasty, mouth-pleasin- g morsel? Many will accept your proposal and take the gift. Even those who do not like PEZ will smile at the convenient, darling and extremely entertaining, character dispensers. The important thing to remember is that whether or not they accept a PEZ, you've got their attention and youve achieved your goal of making contact. ' I or those of you w ho are just beginning in your PEZ journey. Ive compiled a list of helpful hints to keep in mind. Pick a dispenser that is right for you. Many teens think that one dispenser is as good as another but that is just a modem myth. PEZ dispensers come in a variety of shapes and characters. These range from Disney to Batman and Giarley Brown to the new, highly esteemed Pink Panther PLZ that, at this time, is only sold in Europe. V hen you choose your first PLZ dispenser, keep in mind your audience. Guys really relate to Chcwbacca PI Z, says Trevor McLwen, a junior at Mountain View High School in Orem. You know, being hairy and all." pick-u- p PEZ-a-tho- Meet the mystery moderator in TX.s online chat session, 8 pm. each Wednes- day on StandardNLT at www.stan-dar- d net. By SUNSHINE NAKAE TX. you checked Have yourlotschool lately? Teens drive everything from Acuras to I think vehicles have personalities that go with their drivers, or rather drivers have personalities that go with their vehicles. Consider this: its a VW beetle van with a homemade paint job. There are peace signs. Grateful Dead bumper stickers and curtains. Any guesses what the driver might look like? Long hair, beads and bright colors might characterize him or her. The van is a hippie and so is the driver. Then theres the brand new car. Its decked out with a custom license plate that says s. tie-di- like SPLLDY or XL LR-8- . think you get three Geo Metros for every boat, but we'll talk Geos later. These land cruisers get temble gas mileage, around 7 miles per gallon. They can be really earthy colors like lime green, reddish brown or pukey yellow. The radios inside are the fun part because the dials are enormous and the tuner takes up the entire length of the dash. Sometimes these boats have dings and scrapes from where the driver misjudged a distance and crashed into something. Drivers of boat cars can be any type of I correspondent It has two doors and its pretty sporty. Im thinking the driver is one who docs his or her hair every day and wears designer clothing. He or she probably doesnt pay the insurance, gas or payments on the car. He or she may be a chronic speeder and fairly reckless. (And who wouldnt be in a car like that?) Then theres the basic beater. These arc the ones that just run; theres nothing else good to say about them. Rust, sagging bumpers, tom scats and broken everything characterize these vehicles. One boy honked his hom every time he turned the comer in his 86 Subaru GL, not because he wanted to, but because his hom was broken. Vehicles in the beater category usually get names, too. I've heard of Happy Panda" for an 85 black I ord I scort, or I rumpy for an ancient, brown Ford Grenada. Sometimes they get named after defects like Hom happy" or Honker." Drivers of beaters usually think of a senes of complaints before they end the sentence with "... but it runs. They may be any type of personality, but thcyfc definitely not too proud. Boat Cars are fun ones to find in schKl parking lots They are usually Buicks but theyre mostly pushy on the road because they dont care what they hit 9 times out of 10 theyre going to win. That isnt the case with a smaller car. Lets get back to the Geo MctTO. These cars are so small theyre like driving a covered big wheel. Its tons of fun to see how many people you can fit in them without the back dragging on the ground. Most of the time there are many cars like these in high school parking lots because they get good gas mileage and they're cheap. Parents might buy their teen a Sprint or a Ecstiva or a Geo just so they dont have to haul them around. These drivers may be crazy or cautious. Anyone with a brain wouldn't be reckless in car. If a crash were to occur, it a Geo-size- d would usually be ugly. Nevertheless, some teens drive these gutless cracker boxes as if they were turbo diesel trucks. Ah, trucks. These arc my favorite. e Huge, redone, jacked up on larger-than-lif- lues - the or "lough boy" truck. They arc always parked crooked so they take up two spots. Generally most of the owners of these s park in clans right next to each other. They nearly always need new mufflers. tractor-wannabee- by CHANTRY DEWLESCTX. correspondent so you can hear them rumble from miles away, which adds to the manly effect. Other contributors to this manly attitude are the stereo blaring loudly or the metal plates of a womans silhouette on the fenders. This driver is a macho man. His girlfriend sits in the middle of the scat right next to him while he drives down the road. When she gets out, she needs a parachute because the running boards are four feet off the ground. These trucks generally leave manly skid marks on the road when stopping or taking off. Often they have paint jobs with names scripted onto the side or tail gate. Probably the driver is a cowboy who wears tight Wranglers and is a good mechanic. Then there are the family vans. These aircraft carriers can hold entire graduating classes. They arc so much fun to nde in, they have a kind of UTA appeal. The paint jobs may be decent or peeling, and other features vary. The main problem for this driver is that he or she hasn't a car of his or her own. Usually these bus dnvers live up to their name and end of giving bunches of people ndes home, because there's always enough room. Whether you dnvc a brand new car, a beater mobile, a cracker box compact, a boat cruiser, a jackcd-utruck or the family van, Im willing to bet your vehicle suits you. If not, take heart - you could be riding the bus. Lvcn worse, you could be walking. Remember that you're lucky to have a car, and as your Drivers Li teacher always said in that annoying, droning voice, Driving is a privilege, not a right." It's true. Teens' vehicles arc as different as teens. Next time you're in the parking lot, take a look around and see for yourself.
