Show 4 Thursday February TX.LAKESIDE 26: 1998 Lakeside Review SPEAKING OUT: -i Olympic fever always strong for this teen By KRISTA EMPEY inclination was amputation. Although the doctor was able to save his arm, it took a great deal of time and therapy to restore movement to the arm No one thought he would be able to speed skate again, but he wouldn't give up. Eventually, he qualified to compete in this year's Olympics, displaying more courage and strength of character than most champions who discover gold. This is one reason I like the Olympics Many people have worked hard to be there. They have dedicated their ellorts to accomplishing their dreams and becoming the best they can be, and as a result they have inspired young athletes all over the world. 1 watched much of the Olympic coverage this year. I especially enjoyed personal stories of the athletes and the challenges they overcame to get where they are 1 think it makes the games more meaningful, because you feel like you know the athletes. They are more than just a name, which makes it that much sweeter when they win. I often get caught up in the emotion of the moment. I hate to see an athlete fall. Olympians spend nearly their whole lives preparing for JX cofesDonaent Olympics. What exciting It gives us hope, national pnJe and worldwide unity at the same lime. The Olympic events fill us iiih anticipation, and the Olympians give us inspiration Its an honor just to compete in the Olympic Games. Its unfortunaie that the only ones who are remembered are those wnh a medal, and even more unfortunate that the distinction between fame and obscurity often lies in mere hundredths of a second. Indeed, all the Olympic athletes are admirable. Some of the greatest heroes never reach the podium," said a reporter from Channel 2 news recently. For example, the media coverage of the Olympics described a speed skater who, while jogging, ,was run over by a large truck. His arm was severely damaged, and the doctor's first The Fat Absorber . CHITOSJ&N that one moment when they race down the hill or across the track. It's very disappointing to see the dream end in a fall. Several area teenagers I talked to had their own favorite Olympic events Most of the girls liked figure skating, and most of the guys liked downhill skiing or moguls, although some girls liked the moguls, too The preferred Games seemed to be the Winter Olympics, possibly because they just ended However, some said they preferred the Summer Olympics because there are more events. Figure skating is my favonie event I have childhood memories of watching it on TV with my family, mostly my mom. Weve always enjoy ed the beauty and grace of the sport. Every year, the winner of women's figure skating is my new hero. Over the next four years, we will be anticipating the arrival of the Games here in Utah. It will be exciting, interesting and crowded. Hopefully it will also be fun. If you have a dream, this is your time. Krista Empey, a senior at Bonneville High School, is part of a violin performant e group called Pizzicato Strings. Eat or be eaten, kill or be killed. The vegans are trying to protest this by having nothing to do with animal consumption. Of course, the animals they are strtving to protect would have no problem eating their bloody carcasses for dinner. Bulls, stallions, elephants and gorillas get their massive strength from eating vegetation, in his book, "Food For Life. There is some truth to what our parents used to tell us about eating our vegetables. Maybe Popeye wasn't that far olT with his spinach idea. Carefully planned protein intake balances out nutrients far belter than eating anything in sight. A vegan lifestyle simply promotes better health. The vegan claim that milk is made for cows babies and not human babies makes total sense. Eggs are higher in cholesterol than any other food. As for the green eggs and ham, its all up to you. Vegans wouldn't eat it in a box or with a fox or on a train or in the rain. Vegans generally wouldn't die from a heart attack either.
