DEMONSTRATING few moments and congratulates Clear- field High School wrestler Jed Diamond for his win. Then Anderson, a volunteer assistant coach, turns his attention to the next wrestler at a recent dual meet with Northndge High School. This is Andersons fourth season at the school. When hes not giving advice, hes actually showing the wrestlers moves he learned back East where he grew up. There are two other volunteer coaches on the team who are also members of the Air Force. They are Senior Airman Jay Ruthmey-e- r and Senior Airman Brian Yoder. Anderson, 25, can be found in the schools gym every day and at most meets. When the state tournament is over on Saturday, hell head to Colorado Springs, Colo., to wrestle on the Air Force team. He is second in his 152 weight class. Anderson began his wrestling career in Hightstown, N.J., where he wrestled m high school at 140 pounds. He broke the school record for number of wins with 29 under his belt in his senior year. His wrestling career took him to the University of Virgmia where he competed at 142 pounds and earned two varsity letters. After he joined the Air Force he landed in Utah. His love for the sport found him at Clearfields doors offering his services for free. Anderson said coaching has helped him improve as a wrestler. Watching the boys, he understands what his coaches were trying to tell him during his high school and college years. He elievcs if every wrestler coached t least once, they would be a better wrestler. Clearfield's wrestling coach Brent Chase looks at Anderson as the technician of the team. Hes so far advanced in his techniques. He can give better advice to the boys than I can, said Chase, who is also a teacher at the school. Diamond said Anderson expects the boys to succeed. Hes always pushing us hard. He tells us to never give up. He gives us 1 10 percent all the Ume," Diamond said. Chris Smith, representing Maverik corporate offices, apologized for the violations and said they would pay the penalty. I live in this community, too, and don't want to see underage kids buying alcohol. We'll be making some personnel changes to make sure it wont happen again, Smith said. Smith suggested that the council consider requiring everyone to show identification to purchase alcohol. This would make our job easier, Smith said. The suspension period ends April 8. When it comes to technique, thats where Anderson comes in. Albert Hummel, the wrestling team captain, said when team members have a question about wtestling they ask Anderson. teams. The volunteers are a crucial part of any success we have, Lowe said. Lowe said most of the volunteer coaches are not parents of any team members, but people from the community, like Anderson, who love the sport. We have no way to express our appreciation to him (Anderson) or the other volunteers. They bring skills and cover our weak places for all of us. Many of us dont have the time or the expertise in any one area, Lowe Hummel also appreciates the fact Anderson tries to instill good moral values m the boys. Ive never heard him swear or curse, Hummel said. Chuck Savage, a senior, said Andersons competitive experience helps him to understand what the boys are thinking. Chase said. Anderson can also spot when a wrestler is doing something wrong, and not just on the mat. One wrestler was wearing plastic trash bags under his sweats to lose weight. Chase said, and Anderson picked up on it before Chase did and talked to the boy about it. Glens really smart. Really observant, Chase said. Chase expenenced Andersons observation firsthand at the beginning of the season. Anderson was discussing an issue when he realized Chase was not listening Military News Marine 1st Lt. Joseph E. Rupp's unit was participating in urban training when Super Ty- phoon Paka hit the region. l b is l- -l Training was called olT and Marines from Rupps unit provided humanitarian assistance, cleared debns left by the violent storm, and assisted in other recovery operations. Rupp's unit is an expeditionary intervention force with the ability to rapidly organize for combat operations in virtually any environment. MEUs are an infantry battalion, an aircraft squadron, a support group and a Anderson said wrestling is dif- -, ferent on the East coast. Not on- ly are the moves different, but so is the community support. Anderson said it was rare to go to a , meet with empty stands in New Jersey. Here in Utah, the teams , feel lucky if their parents are in the stand, let alone their peers. . Utah wrestlers tend to be more passive, Anderson said. Anderson wishes he knew which boys were instinctively more aggressive because then he knows he could have a state team. He tries as a coach to analyze what works for each wrestler and also teaches them to be more physi-ca- l. I grew up practicing with my best friends. Wed almost get in fist fights on the wrestling match,! but once we were out of the ; wrestling room we were best friends again, Anderson said. ' Anderson doesnt mind not getting paid for the hours he spends with the kids. It docs bother him that the kids have to pay a fee to play in any high school sport.
