Farmington working on redesigning master transportation plan adopting a fire hydrant, you could possibly save yourself or your neighbor extensive losses in case of a fire. Make sure your fire hydrant is visible and dont let it be buried in the snow, said Farmington Fire Chief Larry Gregory. Its important to make certain there is a three-foo- t clearance on all sides of the hydrant. The fire department needs to be able to quickly locate and have ready access to the hydrant. Before the snow amounts begin to build, Gregory suggests residents find out where their closest fire hydrant is to their home and mark it to help keep it clear. In an effort to redesign the Transportation Master Plan, the mayor and city council appointed a committee to study the concerns and problems and come up with recommendations and proposals. The findings of the study will be incorporated in the general plan and adopted as part of local, regional and state transportation plans. Anderson was killed in an Evanston, Wyo., motel by her Mother helps others battle domestic violence By GEOFFREY FATTAH from the manager at the Whirl Inn Motel. A couple had been fighting since the hours. But the shouts and words turned to shrieks and screams, prompting concern from people in the neighboring rooms. In a narcotic-induce- d stupor, Dennis Marshall had beaten Maria countless times with a chair leg. Marshall held police at bay for more than two hours with threats that he had a gun. But the threat was a bluff and Marshall was apprehended. After the standoff, police and paramedics dragged Marias beaten and bloody body outside in a desperate attempt to revive her, but her wounds were too severe. Not one inch of her body had been left unbeaten, Bodily said. She remembers receiving the phone call from her sobbing son. She had prepared emotionally for such a possibility, but it did not lessen the blow. When police questioned Marshall, he said he could not even remember what the two were arguing about. According to the Domestic Violence Coalition, about 6 million women in the U.S. are beaten by boyfriends and husbands; 4,000 of those are killed. Afterward, Bodily, in a quest to find out what actually happened to her daughter, managed to obtain a videotape taken during standoff with police. The tape the two-howas filmed by a volunteer firefighter. The tape is very difficult for her to watch. At times her mind drifts to that dark day on Oct. 8, 1994, at the shabby motel room in Evanston, Wyo., where Maria was bludgeoned to death by her boyfriend, high on metham-phetamin- e. But after three years of grief, this mother - using her daughters tragedy as inspiration in helping others combat domestic violence. It is still hard for her to recount the story without shedding tears. She just prided herself in being strong, Bodily said, holding a stack of blurry photos and newspaper clippings on her lap, She thought she could handle any situation. For several years Maria bounced from one abusive relationship to another. Her boyfriends would physically and emotionally abuse her, but she kept falling in with abusive men. She didn't have any Bodily said, and the mothers feeling was it was only a matter of time before the violence would turn deadly. In 1994, her daughter was caught in a situation beyond her control. It began with an urgent call to police is coming out self-estee- naked and beaten body out of the motel room. But it is the hard reality of domestic violence. Marias death left behind three children, ranging from 5 years to 5 months. The children had been staying with Marias at the time. Bodily said had they been in that room she is convinced they would have been killed, too. Marshall is currently in a Wyoming prison, sentenced to 32 years in prison, along with five years for robbery. The children are being raised by family members. The murder enraged Bodily and left her wondering what more she could have done to turn her daughter around. Ever since Bodily adopted Maria when she was a few months old, she had exhibited a rebellious nature. Her brash behavior led her to drugs, bad friends and eventually dropping out of school. She just did what she wanted to do, Bodily said, despite efforts by her and her husband to love and help her. To this day. Bodily believes her daughter could have been helped at a young age, but after she dropped out of high school it was already too late. Bodily said the loss gripped her for years afterward.
