Each month the theme changes and the 1 foyer turns into a different wonderland of reading. In January students will be escaping to an igloo to read or sitting inside crates wrapped in white paper. "Our school is different from most schools. People often say It looks like a cruise ship," said Tuckeit That difference Gifted From 1 Gifted and Talented is to provide more services to students distric- twide." said Rebecca Odoardi, director of Spectrum programs. Odoardi said that sadly enough, there are not enough teachers who are trained to help with the program for gifted and talented students. More than 19,000 students have been touched by the dise SEM program. trict's the desire for want "Parents part-tim- Worm From . - 1 "Just the whole project is going to be wonderful, and this is a little present out of the blue, she said. You'll be able to see the path the earthworm takes and the consistency of the soil. The school is just in the midst of building its nature center. Weve built trees that are in the area, and were going to put in structured educational processes, where bushes and trees are labeled. Flenniken is also hoping to top off students soil conserva- tion experience with a butterfly garden and a home for critters. Einfeldt, who works with Da- vis schools and other districts, and other education specialists have been working over the years to educate students more about soil conservation. But Einfeldts work throughout Davis County hits home. It was because of my concern over the loss of prime farmland, Einfeldt said. Although Utah has a lot of open land, Einfeldt estimates that only 1.8 percent of it is prime for farming. One of the goals for some state project makers is to include more agriculture teaching in school curriculums, and to expand the curriculum to seventh-an- d - eighth-grader- ( s. We have always tried to get the word out about soil conserva- tion, but recently got out the ef- fort to educate children and adults and everyone statewide to raise awareness, because without the soil there is no life, and a lot of people dont realize that, Einfeldt said. Superintendent Darrell White said he hopes that parents will reSEM proalize that the part-um- e gram is a way to better serve the needs of their children. "Research has shown that students do belter in a heterogeneous setting, rather than being pulled out and put in a homogeneous group," he said. Currently, 31 schools run the the homes we live in and the cars we drive. Unless we get that message out to folks, we could be in a world of hurt, particularly with the growth that Utah is experiencing. Hill Field Elementary joins the ranks of other Davis County schools that have nature centers in progress. Among them, Mountain View Elementary School is busy transforming its courtyard into a nature center. In the center of the yard is a boxed-i- n area that is home to rabbits, turtles and chickens. In the spring, the kindergarten classes will plant bulbs, flowers and vegetables around it, said teacher Sally Ogilvie, who is overseeing the project. The school is also planning to cover the top of the center with mesh wire to make a butterfly garden. Ogilvie is envisioning having elementary students take care of the animals, so they can' get a firsthand experience on caring for animals and watching them grow.
