And it was that kind of care for others that is at the heart of the award he received. In August 1995 one of SparMike McMcr rows rick, was killed in an automobile accident. "Mike was a great person," Sparrow said, "and a very good builder. In fact, if building trusses was an Olympic sport, Mike would have been a gold medalist. He was really that good." Wanting to pay tribute to McMerrick in some meaningful way. Sparrow and Anderson Lumber established the Mike McMerrick Scholarship Fund, ' awarded through the NWHBA to v students pursuing careers in the building and construction industry- - Sixteen months later on Dec. 7, 1996, the first scholarship awards were made. ' I was just getting home from those ceremonies and was feeling so good about what had just happened, when I got a phone call," Sparrow said. The call informed him that another friend and respected member of the building industry, Rick Adams, had been caught in an avalanche while snow mobiling. "It was just so hard to believe," Sparrow said. "We held out such hope for him. After the death of Adams, Sparrow said the calls came in immediately, from other builders and contractors, wanting to help out in any way. "Ill just never forget the framers who came to finish the two jobs that Rick was working on. They worked through some of the coldest days of last winter," Sparrow said. "I really don't remember whose idea it was first, but we soon decided that we wanted to build a home, with donated labor and materials, as much as possible. Then the proceeds from the sale of the home would go to i Rick's family." Even though Adams did have a couple of small insurance policies, everyone in the association knew that those funds would be insufficient over time. "Our goal was to do something that would really help out Ricks family and give them more time to do the things they would have to do," Sparrow said. j Sparrow, along with Jerry Preston, owner of JPC Contracting, volunteered to head up and orchestrate the Rick Adams memorial house building project for the association. "We were just amazed at the response," Sparrow said. This whole community came and pulled together like we could not have believed. People have been so generous. It's truly one of the greatest things Ive ever been involved with. And its only been possible because so many people have done so much. Preston echoes those sentiments. It was the association that came through and made this happen," he said. In addition to coordinating the CLASSIFIED ADS volunteer work that was pouring In, Sparrow and Preston coordinated with most of the lumber companies in the valley for donated materials. "Everyone seemed to think, in the back of their minds, how this could have happened to anyone of them. Rick had no way of knowing his life was about to end," Sparrow said. "I suppose you couldnt help but hope that if 'it ever were to happen to you, that others would want to help out your family, like we were all wanting to help out Ricks." The home, being built in the Silver Lakes subdivision in Syracuse, is near completion, and Sparrow gives the credit to Preston and the countless others who have helped with the project. "Jerry is a super, caring indi vidual. HeS a real leader in the community and in the industry," Sparrow said. "Its been a great privilege to work with him and all those who have wanted to do what they could for Ricks family." In speaking of the NWHBA 1997 Award, Sparrow is especially shy. even uncomfortable that hes been singled out. it , Work Guaranteed AH 5 Free Estimates 520 South State, Clearfield 292-163- 6 773-483- 6 r -- Mh 3430 .
