Is il something sui.pen'ielul, gory or just pbin Tunny? , There is a great satiety of horror films out there from all different eras, and it may he hard to choose when it comes time to collect a group oT friends and sit down for your annual Fright Night" this 1 alloween. Whether you like the classic films of the 1930s to 1960s or more recent films from the 1970s to 1990s, there is something out there for you. I recently sat dow n with a bunch of horror films, many of which I had never seen, and decided to find out which movies are worth Renting. Firjt I reviewed the classics. Dradula," "The Bride of Frankenstein," "The Pit and the Pend id urn" and The Wolfman created a ghoulish atmosphere. If you are into vintage films or just like to laugh when watching a horror film, with the exception of The Pit and the Pendulum, this category is for you. ' Dracula," The Bride of Frankenstein and The Wolfman are the true classics, while The Pit and the Pendulum, an Edgar Allan Poe story, is a psychological thriller that is probably the second scariest film I have ever seen. You can tell the time period it was made in by the amount and the quality of the special effects. They are out to spook you, but with some of the gore fests that come to theaters nowadays, they are of no comparison -wMch is good, in my opinion. Those filmsare the ones we always hear about around Halloween, but some.of the true screamers were made more recently. The scariest movie I have ever seen - The Exorcist - is within this category. It not only left me , it also was very hard to handlp. . .The plot lies around the question of faith, jk Catholic priest doubts his faith and isjtested by Satan, who possesses a girl. Halloween has been around a long time, and most of the celebration associated with it has, too. In The Great Halloween Book, author Mark Walker states that after the Celtic feast of Samhain, the lord of death, groups of peasants went from house to house demanding money and food. Those households who the peasants thought didnt give in abundance became targets of pranks and mischief. Instead of offending the spirits, the Greeks invited them and held a celebration called Anthesteria in their honor. At the end of the weeks celebration, Walker writes, the Greek priests would chant, Be gone, ye ghosts: It is no longer Anthesteria, to again usher the spirits home. The Celtic new year fell on Nov. 1, thus new years eve fell on Oct. 31. Druids, or Celtic priests, commanded the townspeople to build huge bonfires in which animal and human sacrifices were made because Celtics believed that animals, especially black cats, were inhabited by the evil spirits of those who had died. Christian missionaries eventually made their way into Celtic regions. The missionaries were shocked to The question: Should teens go pumpkins, spook , T'-- J some teenaged candies and other favorable treats so they wouldnt be harassed by the peasants. Halloween traditions go back to ancient Rome, when townspeople celebrated the Feast of Pompona. Pompona is described in Walkers book as The goddess of Orchard. They celebrated the harvest with a week-lon- g festival full of activities such as eating, drinking and exchanging nuts and fruits. The Feast of Pompona is where todays popular Halloween game of bobbing for apples originated. Not all teens favor this Halloween tradition. Michelle Wall, 17, of Farmington says, Its the grossest part of any Halloween party. Current Halloween traditions originated all over the world. The Romans believed that by hollowing out gourds, a type of squash similar to pumpkins, and placing a lit candle or oil rag inside of it, they would be protected from and candy com. Costumes and trick-o- r treating also are big Halloween rituals. But have teens grown out of some of these Halloween cus-- toms?- Children start dressing up for the holiday as early as 1 year old. Festive babies are dressed as black cals, pumpkins and ghosts before they visit Grandma and Grandpa for pictures on their first Hallow een. Even elementary school children often can be mistaken for a super hero or a character from the latest animated series. Elementary schools encourage dressing up; They have costume parades or Halloween carnivals that give students that extra chance to sport their duds in front of teachers, friends and parents. But what about teenagers? Are we too old to dress up? Of course not. Cami Vanderwerff, a senior at Bonneville High School, makes it clear that were never to old to dress up. Even our parents dress up, she says. There are some things you grow out of like jeans and Barbie dolls, but not dressing up for Halloween. 'Ihe missionaries themselves feared that they, too, might be cast into the bonfires. They set up Nov. 1 as All Hallows Day, Walker writes, and the night before became All Hallows Eve - later shortened to Halloween. People spent Halloween indoors during the Middle Ages, huddled around fires. It was believed that if an evil spirit found someone doing anything wrong and that person was not protected by a garlic wreath or a lit then the evil spirit could enter the body of the sinner.
