What a wonderful tmiru--i mcnL There arc a M of tdand and u would id get fiwt it we diJnl continually N monitor eur roviitun. It wa fun to fix our pmiiion and find (jnJmarhf to Identify with on the chart. The ClS dunce id a new way point when the eurrent one has been reached to to there it aJwayi a bearing to follow. There may be cv-e- ul way pointt to a destination. However, each way point hat lo be programmed into the ClS and identifiable on die chart Tbii was the first time for me to do a9 this and it was fascinating to think some objects way up in the sky are sending signals to our little computer. Tor those of you not familiar with a chart, it has latitude and longitude along the mar gins so you can obtain a precise location on the chart. That's the difference between a map and a chart. I thought currents and tides would be a n M J ay problem but for the live of our boat and its power plant, currents were hole problem and in nul lucatkms they arent strong, but tides did hase to be considered, rrevwlly when aikfuytng, We had Id make sure that we knew the height t4 iic tide at both low and Inch so we didnt aiwhnr and wind up on the bottom if die water disappeared from beneath us. If we anchored at low tide we had id make sure we had enough anchor line out so when the tide came in it didn't try id pull die boat under the water. There are published tide U bles winch we used religiously. Since the weather was so fair we didn't have to navigate in foul conditions, but then I probably wouldn't have anyway. The only way I woulJ cruise in bad wtath cr would be if I was accidentally caught up in it. It's best to wait it out poor conditions. We listened to die weather reports on the marine weather channel each morning and evening. Boating on the coast is certainly dilferent than on our smaller lakes in Utah. Since there is a lot of area, congestion is not, or at least was not for us. a problem. There were virtually no personal watercraft. While they are a lot of fun to rule, many ml cn simply are unaware of navigation rules and tend to make it unpleasant for boaters. Fishing wasn't very good and we only aught one salmon but die crabbing was ex had some wonderful crab dm fwrs, W found that the best crabbing was when wt were at anchor in a protected bay, in relatively shallow water and a soft TVre were times that we would have M to I) crabs m the pot within half an hour. What did I learn from this experience? I learned a lot about navigation - use a chart and all the toots available and know your hvauon at all tunes. I teamed how to handle a large venl well and I (earned how to ue radar to some tent. One of the most important lessons was about clearing customs. Never get olf the boat before notdjmg customs. Call in and advise them where you intend to dock and they will tell you whether you can clear by phone or wait I or an agent. We gm off the boat fast, then called. T hey were quiik to let us know dut we could be fined 1 jjttiO for cash person who had prematurely disembarked. While I don't think we will be handed the penalty it's something to remem bcr. All in all, it was probably the best vacation I've ever had. I must aJd that one of the things that made it so nice was that I had all my sons and their wives with me and the boat was large enough that we weren't crowded. There were 10 of us. Every boater should experience such a cruise once in their lifetime. Since this will be my last article until next boating season, thanks for reading my col umns and "sea ya next year."
