The sound waves actually eauve your eyes to vibrate so much that it's difficult to focus on the cars as they race pact. It's over in 6 seconds. This is the way the Joker's Wild racing team thrills pecu-tor- s every weekend during the racing season. Car owner and driver Kevin Brown of Clearfield has been a licensed National Hot Rod Association driver for six years, and has been involved in motorsports for 18 years. His car is what is known as a Federal Mogul Dragster, formerly called a Top Alcohol Dragster because of the type of fuel it bums. "I got interested in racing as a kid." Brown said, "because my dad was a street-ro- d enthusiast. I took up street redding when I got my driver's license, but it didn't take long for me to realize how dangerous it was. I decided I would build cars for the track not the streets." Brown is also the owner of Classic Restorations, a classic automobile restoration shop in Clearfield. His racing team has been together for several years and is considered to be one of the top teams in the sport. Jayne, his wife, is the team manager and has been involved in motorsports for 15 years. She is responsible for keeping the books, and making arrangements for events and team accommoda nals Steamboat at held Springs. Colo., in August. They were the only Utah team represented. Nick Kelly of Bountiful was the team's sponsor. They also participated in the United States Slow-pticSoftball Association regional Labor Day weekend where they look sixth place out of 24 teams represented. The team participated in the Ogden City League and went undefeated winning the league championship. They took third pljce in the June Classic and First place in the honccr Day tournament. They were sijic champions in Triple Crown Sports. The team was coached by Solomon Ortiz of Layton. h J Brown's junior crew chief is his son Tyler. He plans to debut his 1997 CNE Junior Dragster this year. His car will look identid cal to the dragster. Tyler has been racing since he w as 9 is actively involved in teaching other youth about motorsports. Owning a Federal Mogul Dragster is not exactly like owning a family automobile. If you were to "go shopping" for one, plan on spending about $200,000. "It is easy for an owner to put up to $250,000 in a car like this," Brown said. "It takes a lot of time and money to get a car reaJy for the racing circuit, and the expenses during the season arc phenomenal." After every run the car is brought into the pit where the oil is drained and replaced with 12 quarts of 60 weight racing oil. All the spark plugs are changed, all the valves are and the engine is given a very thorough inspection. If anyone on the crew has any doubts about the safety or quality of any part, the engine will be completely torn down and any defective or questionable parts replaced. The crew has about 1 12 to 2 hours to do this. Before the race the engine is started to ensure it is running right, and then the spark plugs ure replaced again just prior to the race.
