Davis County has one book-mobi-le that serves smaller towns such as Fruit Heights, Syracuse and West Point. Even so, participation in the program has remained stable. So much so that Davis County Library Director Pete Giacomo expects it to keep rolling into 2000. But in Box Elder County, which covers 3,300 square miles, there is no room in the budget for branch libraries. And bookmobiles are not faring much better. It has been a difficult process over the past five years, said Paul Burt, head of the countys library board. We used to go to a number of schools but weve had to cut a lot of those out. The latest challenge is finding about $22,000 to ensure that one of the two county bookmobiles will stay on the road next year. County commissioners are expected to consider the issue in September. Meantime, GREAT SOFAS backs. Bookmobiles have been eliminated in Salt Lake and Weber counties. The use of bookmobiles along the Wasatch Front started losing ground in the late 1980s, when the federal government shifted funding toward library technology. The states were left to pick up the slack - as were the counties. Box Elder was one of the few Utah counties that has been able to keep a $96,000 program afloat.
